Please suggest a knife - classy pocket folder with modern features

I hate to say this because it is over budget but what you really want is a Chris reeves mnandi

No, the OP was emphatic that nail nicks are unacceptable. Actually, aside from price of course, the small Sebenza 21 with wood inlays would be ideal.

My bad small sebneza with wood Inlays it is then!!

Wow, what a great forum. I didn't expect to come back to see so many replies. Thanks everyone!

So far the front-runners are the Shinola + Benchmade Custom 485 Valet and the Benchmade 690. Also looking seriously at the Boker Exskelibur II.

To answer a few other questions:
- I'm really set on having wood scales or inlays, unfortunately.
- I already have an Opinel. GREAT knives, especially for the price. Unfortunately they're a bit thick for pocket carry, don't have a pocket clip, and aren't easy to open with one hand. Still, I always keep one around.
- I've never really warmed up to the "leaf-like" blade shape of many Spydercos. I have a few, and despite being some of the best slicers I've ever used, they've never really grown on me. I'd grab a Sage 4 if I found it under $100, but otherwise I just don't care for the looks of it for some reason. It's an outstanding knife, though.
- I plan on getting a Small Sebenza with inlays at some point. The biggest problem for me is I'd be afraid to lose it or accidentally bring it somewhere and have it confiscated.

Remember that there are plenty of craftsman here that would be glad to make you a set of scaled in whatever wood you want for whatever knife you want.

Modern features ?
You mean like a backup ball point pen and a flash light ? Then look to Swiss Army Knives.

OK, OK
seriously how about this one. I like it a lot. Made by Boker. Ebony wood handle. Black low ride clip. Frame lock.
Very light, elegant, good size blade for a suit and tie knife.

PS: Oops I almost forgot the Boker is called a Gent and comes in two sizes : 2-3/4 inch blade and 3-1/4 inch blade

GB940Rookie,

Oh man ! You just opened up a whole new world to me with your photo of the Grip with the wood scales.
I am about to buy my first grip and I really like the black scales but have learned recently that they seem low quality (sound plasticy and maybe too light and kind of hollow). I think I will really like the fit in the hand of the stock black ones but wanted an option to go to. I don't tend to like much if any of the after market scales especially the price.

I can easily make the wood scales and I am thinking riffler file for the diamond like texture and make 'em roundy just like the black ones. That is if I am not satisfied with them. (probably carry in a pouch rather than pocket so thick handle will be OK for me).

But anyway thanks for the dope slap.

Take a look at MCusta knives ;)

I would still suggest you look at a Chaparral. The Carbon Fiber is a really nice knife. It is smaller than most of the suggestions but still has a just under 3" blade. It is very size efficient. It is slim and light, It will not drag your pants down, but still has a useful blade.
Pascal suggested a Fallkniven Gentleman's Folder, and that would be a beautiful choice, if a bit heavy and expensive.

My vote goes for Mcusta knives. I had one, gave it as a gift to a friend. F&F was excellent.

if your willing to sacrifice on wood for synthetics you, i think lionsteel TRE (g10) is a homerun with sculpted titanium/ Bohler m390 (the 199 version). I suppose you might be able to make your own wood scale for it. That might sound like extra work but i personally like to personalize my knives, whether that be scales or etching or both. just my .02

oh and mcusta maybe?

Be aware that Boker Exskelibur II is not a front flipper like its big brother.
It has a nail nick on the blade.
If you can tolerate the longer blade of Exskelibur I and like a thin blade stock slicer, I would higly recommend it.

Miso

Good to know, I thought something looked fishy.

Considering it's only in the $60-70 range, I'll probably pick up an Exskelibur I in Cocobolo just to have as a backup. :)

Wow, the TRE is gorgeous (just like their TiSpine). I think I see one in my future, just not to fulfill this need. :)

If you dont mind carbon fiber scales over wood I would suggest taking a look at the Southern Grind Spider Monkey. It a 3.2oz folder with a 3.25" S35vn blade, just a tad bit over what you were looking for but it is my go to dress up carry. Some pics for reference compared to a Kershaw Skyline.
