I have had good results with blades made from old spring-tine cultivator blades. Although it is not a "KNOWN" steel, one that that I do know is....... it makes for a pretty tuff blade.

Here is another one that I forged this week.

OAL - 8 1/2"
Blade (sharpened edge) - 4"
Paracord wrapped, dyed, and sealed with teak oil

This one is SOLD

Thanks for looking.............. Robert

I'm curious. When I think of cultivator tines I think of what would be a roughly a 1.5"x.75" bar after it was straightened and "untwisted." That won't make any sense unless it's what you're using. Is it? Or are you finding older cultivators that where....umm....built "lighter"?

Great knife by the way. My tastes are changing since I came aboard and I'm really starting to like knives with "forging marks" or whatever still left visible.

From what Robert makes I think some of his "cultivators" were really subsoilers. They have fairly heavy tines. They are OLD too.

Here is a photo of the "digging" end of one of those spring tines. The upper part had a curve in it and was around 2 1/2 feet long overall.

Very appealing Robert.
Team that up with one of your blacksmiths knives and you are "good to go"
Could you post the thickness and possibly the hardness?
many thanks,
Bill

Bill, this knife is .190 at the thickest part of the spine. Distal taper runs to the tip.

How hard? ....... I broke my Rockwell tester when I was testing the hardness of Woodpecker Lips.:D Seriously, no idea on the Rc scale. I test all my knives on the brass rod for chipping or edge rolling. From there I do some chopping on a red oak log, cut some cardboard, whittle on some pine, then see if it will still slice paper. This one passed with flying colors.

Received my knife today, thanks Robert. The picture does not do this knife any justice, the knife is beautiful and very well done.
