Plumb Broad Hatchet

I'm going to take a wild guess and say that that is a carpenter's hatchet, which is particularly suitable for making wooden roofing shingles.

The flat edge doesn't look optimized for ordinary axe duties.

single-bevel, cutting edge. I wonder if this means chisel grind?

They have a nearly flat handle - it should be angled more, like a broad axe. They are used for shaping or debarking logs - thus the single bevel. I ordered mine through a local ACE hardware ~$15 many years back when I saw a yuppee mail order woodworking supply store selling them fur $55 in their catalog. I cleaned one short and small log... then tested it's BTU-ability in my Franklin stove. Not a wilderness tool - their (Plumb) camp hatchet - with a leather belt sheath - would be better, if it's still available. Mine was bought by my Mom for me with Green Stamps... in the early sixties!
