I know that the Native, Manix, Sage, and Chapparal are all similar sized and priced are there any other models that fall in this category? My son lost his PM2 and doesn't know what else would be a suitable replacement. Thanks in advance your time and opinions.

Having had all of those knives at some point or another, the chaparral is an outlier as it's quite a bit smaller and thinner than the rest, including a very thin blade that I'm a big fan of. It's like a mini-native or mini-sage, depending on how you look at it.

Others:
PM3
yojimbo (if you like wharncliffes)
stretch (a little cheaper)
caly 3
superleaf
terzuola (slipjoint)

What uses is he trying to accomplish and what did he like/not like about the PM2? I assume it's a "get another PM2 or see what else is about the same" type of situation for you? PM3 and manix will be the closest for in hand feel followed by the native 5 and then sage series. I haven't used the rest on the list I mentioned but the caly 3 gets a lot of good comments. The sage and native are some of my favorites for EDC and the chaparral is a great dress/gentleman's modern folder or just when you want something smaller.

To me, there are three size categories of folders, based on edge length (as apposed to blade length). Below 3in; between 3in and 3.5in; above 3.5in.

Based on that and not factoring the price, I would add the following for consideration as a PM2 replacement,
Southard, Mantra, Shaman, Cali 3.5, SpydieChef, Advocate, Stretch, D'Allara, Slysz Bowie, Silverax, ATR

Of the many knives that I choose from for carry, most are PM2 or Manix 2 so I consider those somewhat interchangeable. The Bradley folder is similar sized as is the Tenacious.

I've explored a number of other models and find that it's pretty hard to beat the PM2.

That said, if he's just wanting to try something new, it would be helpful to know what he likes/dislikes about the PM2.

If he liked his PM2 and used it...just buy another one, maybe a diff version of it...he will prob keep missing it if he doesn't.

Why don't just buy another PM2?
Because he lost it,i.e. didnt care about it enough to search for as long as it took to find it! I am like s shepherd with my knives, if I can't find one that I like I will stop what I'm doing, retrace my steps until I find the damn thing! Maybe I'm just weird?!

para 3 would be a grate replacement!or caly 3,and both are in same price range(stock versions),just got my para 3 about 2 months ago and loving it,its blade thickness a tad more then PM2 and not as touchy at the point.

Let me see if I get you right. So if you lose your PM2 in the Pacific Ocean, you'll make every effort until you find it, correct?

I don't appreciate the freedom some of you are taking in denigrating my son. I see no need for it when none of you know him. At the age of 26 my Eagle Scout son is the assistant technical director for a nationally acclaimed private college for the performing arts in Hollywood. The knife was lost about two months ago and was probably stolen. He has been unable to find it.

That's above Mark Ratner's position (the assistant to the assistant manager of the movie theater), yes? ;)

I wouldn't lose it in the Pacific Ocean

Please accept my apologies, I didn't intend to denigrate your son; it's quite likely I have never met him, and so couldn't possibly judge him in any way whatsoever. I hope it is eventually recovered, because I despise thieves and often wish we had harsher penalties for such crimes. I flippantly remarked that I when I can't locate a folder which Ive brought to work I never stop looking for it, but when I feel that it may be genuinely gone for good I cry a little inside! I'm sorry I took the liberty to assume he had been careless with his knife! But I would not let a pm2 fall into the Pacific Ocean ever, but if somehow it happened I'm way too afraid of sharks or even sea snakes or saltwater crocodiles to go after it, and would replace it with Spyderco Military; legal restrictions be damned!

if your son liked the PM2 go and buy another fast ,if he could do a smaller one go for the Sage5!both hard to beat.

I'd try out the manix on him, a couple of my younger co-workers really like the lock mech on it.

He might appreciate it more than the PM2.

If he liked the pm2 then he liked the compression lock. The guy probably did like the rest of us and flicked the knife open and closed 1k times a day. He needs a new pm2. I say buy him another and buy him a g10 manix 2 as well. That way he gets his pm2 fidget flicker, a dose of manix 2, and you'll never have to post this question again because he'll start buying more and more on his own...

I find it hard to believe that nobody mentioned the Domino. They are basically the same size and it is a great knife. I switch back and forth Between the Para2 and the Domino.
