PM2 FRN Ultralight?

Seems like most of the popular knives have been made in FRN but not the Para2. Is the compression lock not compatible with the FRN handles? I think this would be a great seller for spyderco, am I missing something? Would you buy one?

I think the majority of frn are made in Japan. I don't think they make compression locks, that's mostly golden factory. Correct me if I'm wrong cause I'm not 100% on that.

Both the native and Manix lightweights are made in the US. A FRN PM2 would be a home-run. I actually would like to see a PM2 FRN with a back lock, but that may be sacrilege to some.

The Manix2 lightweight is actually FRCP rather than FRN, and I believe the Native is FRCP as well. I don't think there would be enough weight difference between the G-10 version and an FRN/FRCP version to really call it a lightweight. The only thing that might make it a home run is if it came in significantly cheaper than the existing model, which is what I assume people are really fishing for here. The only FRN compression lock knife I recall off hand was the Vesuvius, and they had lock problems with it. They switched it to a back lock and called it the Centofante 3, which worked well.

They seem to be selling PM2s as fast as they can make them. They'd probably have to expand the factory again to keep up with another home run like that.

You would still need the steel liners so I’m doubtful of much weight saving. Also, if I were Spyderco, I would lean towards keeping the PM2, Para3 and Military as my Golden Flagships and not potentially cheapen the “military” branding.

I'd be down for this and the Military getting the lightweight/bd1 treatment. I can afford the existing models but FRN/FRCP has its appeals.

They make FRN models in all of the main plants I believe. That or FRCP, which I'm sure would be fine with the OP. Japan has produced compression locks as well. The ouroboros and super leaf come to mind, but it'd be a huge misstep I think to move pm2 or Millie production to Japan. Even for just a single variant.

I'd love an FRN/FRCP version of them both though. I prefer them to g10 as a handle material. It just feels nicer in the hand. The fact that it's also cheaper is even better.

Generally models aren't offered in FRN because the molds are really expensive, but I think the PM2 and Military have more than proven themselves worthy of the investment.

Come on Sal Glesser Sal Glesser ! Gimme an FRN Millie and PM2. All of the colors.

Hi Rockgolfer,

Eric has been planning one for some time. The main advantage would be less expensive. Have to fit it into the queue.

Any idea what steel we'll be looking at? If it's d2 I'l drive to Golden and give you a big ol' kiss. Or a sandwich.

I don't consider the PM2 to be all that heavy to start with. The G10 Manix 2 is heavier than the PM2, and the LW version of the Manix 2 is lighter than the PM2. The LW Manix 2 has steel liners but much smaller than the liners in the G10 version and this explains most of the weight difference. Since the compression lock needs a longer liner to make the lock function you couldn't take out as much liner as you can with the Manix 2. I like the LW Manix 2 and the G10 version too. I'm happy with my current PM2s but I would buy a LW version if an interesting variant was made.

Apologies...I was referencing the Manix LW in my post. My LWs don’t have any liners. Which of yours have them?

Part of my concern, with no engineering experience whatsoever, if that the finicky comp lock with be more finicky with the lighter scales.
