PM2 Lock Stick and Blade Play Help

A few months ago I purchased my first Paramilitary 2, which I absolutely love. However recently it has started to develop slight blade play, and tightening the pivot just makes it stiff. It also developed lock stick which wasn't present when I first got it. I have done quite a lot of research and tried many things such as rotating the stop pin, using graphite on the lock interface, and polishing the washers. Any recommendations about how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I would suggest sending it in to Spyderco, or at least giving them a call.

I would but shipping to the USA from Australia would be so expensive it would nearly cost the same to just replace it. I will try to give them a call later if I cant fix it.

Thanks

Ah, yes. I didn't see your location (tapatalk). Where did you purchase the knife?

Just thought I would give a quick update. Flicking the knife compulsively hasn't improved my knife what so ever, as my blade still has play unless the pivot screws are cranked down tight making the blade stiff. I am honestly considering buying a new PM2 :(

My limited experience tells if you take apart and then put together the spyderco, the exact position of parts changed a bit and hence blade play, sticky lock, off centering etc. You can repeat the process multiple times to see if it helps although it generally not a good idea to repeatedly dissemble your knives. I think there is a good reason why spyderco does not recommend customers to tinker their knives.

I have managed to reduce the sticky-ness of the lock and have realised that if I put more force into opening it the blade play seems to be more manageable, however slight up and down play still remains. I guess I'll have to live with it unless anyone knows how to fix it.

My diagnosis... Its the stop pin screws.

Would explain the blade play and the now stick lock (loose stop pin allows different lock engagement). Try playing with the pivot and the stop pin screw tightness.

I have tried messing with all the screws but no matter what the knife either seems to be super stiff with solid lock up or smooth but with blade play.

Thanks for the advice.

Hmmmm. I don't know then.

If it was my knife I would take it completely apart, clean, and put it back together. That usually solves those types of problems, but I know many people do not want to take their knife apart.

When you say it's stiff, is it stiff with the lock bar disengaged? In other words is it only stiff when you're trying to flick or open the knife? Or if you disengage the lock does it then swing freely? Could just need some lube on the detent track/ball.

You can try loosening the pivot and stop pin screws, blast with soap and hot water, blow dry and relube, then set your pivot/hardware.

I wouldn't bother sending it in. You took it apart and modified it (polishing the washers which I personally think can make blade play worse). I doubt they would honor the warranty.

Try tightening the stop pin screws with just the bit and your fingers and then adjust the pivot so theres no play. I did this with mine when I had the same issue and the screws haven't loosened up and it flicks and locks awesome.

I have taken apart and cleaned it a few times and it didn't seem to help. When I disengage the lock the blade does not swing freely at all it just stays in the same spot. I will try cleaning it with some hot water and putting some lube on the bearing and seeing if that changes anything.
