PM2 Question

See this spot where the pivot is going into the liner?

Not my image.
I can only see this in and out sound you are describing being cauzed in this spot between pivot and liner

Ok now that I reread the op's post and understand what he mean I will say no, it is not normal.

The way you describe it best is by saying itnfeels like the hole the pivot goes through is too big causing slop. Describe it this way to Spyderco customer service.

Sebenza 21's use a bushing that is locked between the handle slabs when tightened. Their pivots don't have the issue you described. What you describe is surely the cause on some knives, but not all. This is perhaps one problem with multiple sources. It still does it on both of my CR knives and most of my other knives. Many here are not getting the point or maybe not testing it the same as OP. Hackenslash also seems to be talking about "normal" up/down side/side play. He says to grip the knife locked open to feel for play.

To test this leave any liner or frame lock in between detent and lock up. Act like your trying to pull the blade out of the handles... It's just like how most people break down and assemble a sebenza blade when cleaning, by pulling it out and pushing it back.

MAYBE... just maybe all my knives are "duds" with this in/out play. That seems statistically laughable. However, I don't care. All my knives get carried, cleaned and sharpened AND HAVE NEVER LET ME DOWN even with their tiny almost undetectable wiggle.

I'm only talking about pm2. I left mine at friends house. Will try this at home when i get it back.

I've been checking my knives and I'm pretty sure they all have it as well. I've just never checked for it. I can think of no way in which this would ever be considered a defect. The movement disappears when the knives are locked open. Even if it didn't, I don't see how a mm or so of movement in this direction would ever affect the function of the knife. I'm guessing it's caused by the fact that the pivot hole in the blade needs to be slightly larger than the pivot pin in order to allow free movement. If I'm correct, the only way to have absolutely no movement like we're experiencing would be to make a knife without a functioning pivot.

Just got my lefty PM2 today, and there is zero blade play in any direction, blade open or closed.
