PM2: s110v or wait for Maxamet

I'm thinking on upgrading my EDC from Tenacious. It is very nice and solid folder but the steel is mediocre.

So, considering two supersteels -- s110v or Maxamet, there is no Paramilitary 2 in Maxamet; should I go with current PM2 s110v offering or wait for one with Maxamet blade or just buy Manix 2 in Maxamet?

And how would you rate these steel types compared?

Thanks a lot.

How are your sharpening skills?
While s110v is awesome!
Can you bring it back to sharp, when it dulls?
It's not "hard" to sharpen. Just takes time and the right stones.

I haven't tried Maxemet, yet, but I would be in for a PM2!

There are also M390, S35VN, and CRUWEAR available from Bentobox - $$.

I prefer PM2 over Manix 2. I only have experience with Manix 2 LW, and I don't like it. Too slippery when wet, trying to close one handed.

My S110V PM2 is one of my favorite edc Knives. Holds an edge forever and is easily maintained by stropping in my experience. Sharpens up perfectly on the wicked edge too.

Maxamet will give you better edge holding, but much worse corrosion resistance. It's also going to cost a good bit more whenever it does come out.

I don't have any Maxamet blades, but I read that it prefers a coarser finish for best performance. I'm a big fan of refined edges, myself, not that I won't get one and try it.

I'm really happy with S110V, personally. I not only like the edge retention, but also the super stainless nature of the steel. The older I get, the less I want patina and/or rust.

Get both and compare.
My opinion... both are equal in very limited categories, s110v is much better in stainless, maxamet is 10x better in overall edge quality.

Assuming you are properly equipped to sharpen it, I would suggest S110V. It is very good for edge-holding with the added benefit of corrosion resistance. We don't know if and when we will get Maxamet, but if you like patina on your knife then you have your answer.

I'll always choose stainless in a folder. Maybe it's just me but I would go crazy thinking that there maybe some juice from an apple or something stuck i the pivot area that I can't properly wash out. Thus constantly taking down the whole knife to clean it out.

The most cost effective stainless super steel would be S110V in PM2. There's also 204P and M390 that fit the bill for stainless and extreme edge retention. I would suggest you to learn how to properly maintain an edge, know how to strop. You can then send the knife to have a nice edge done and just maintain it. I have the PM2 S110V that was sharpened 18 month ago and it is still hair popping sharp, I do strop it often or after each carry, it takes 2 minutes. I use it pretty normally as edc knife, open packages, cut up cardboard boxes, slice some news prints and printing paper for fun, whittle some wood etc...

S110V for me all day. I'm more stainless steel type , because I don't like patina and corrosion. Maxamet has bit better edge retention, but S110V is a beast too. 6000ft of cardboard in Ankerson test;) Maxamet is also more expensive. 160 in LW Manix so I guess PM2 will be near $200 and it's still not sure when.
I would say get a Manix S110V in G10. More hand filling than PM2, ambidextrous lock, lighter than regular Manix and more robust than FRN. For $140 its a steal

There will be a Golden Colorado made maxamet knife.... just dont know specifically which model yet, most likely a pm2 and possibly more. i have only see Sal verify on this forum that something is in the works. in my opinion it could be a very long time until we see it tho (but dont quote me on that). maxamet is not easy to work with for manufacturers.

i have a mule in maxamet and a manix2 in s110v ... i like both, but i dont edc the maxamet at all cause its a fixed blade. so im waiting for a PM2 or something else in maxamet. the LW models are not serviceable so i wont get one, but im tempted.

invest in sharpening supplies if you get either, or send it off to someone to sharpen, just make sure they have sharpened either steel (15-20$ a blade is the average price iirc).

I just today picked up a PM2 in s110v, used from the exchange, and it was nowhere near sharp. I spent maybe 30 minutes on 3 sets of rods on the sharpmaker (med. Fine. Extra fine) and this thing is silly sharp! I do not consider myself a good knife sharpener, at all, so if I can achieve this level of sharp, anyone can. I'm glad I didn't read all of this thread before buying the knife or I may not have, given the level of cautionary posts about sharpening s110v. Based on this evening's experience it is nothing to be concerned with.

Congrats on the new knife, and congrats on the sharpening! Always satisfying making a dull knife sharp, especially when people talk about the difficulty to do so (s110v).

Now the real question... which spidie next? Haha
