Pm2 suprise

Taichung knives seem to me overpriced for what they are; a slight improvement over Golden technologically, but seems that the savings (labor mostly) aren't passed along to the consumers...Since I live here, I want to spend my money on stuff made here. When I visit another country I want something made there. Maybe I am too much an authenticist dinosaur. The only exception would be if I wanted titanium handles, since the vast majority is produced by China, Russia, and Japan.

^^ Having hard time deciding. I tried the GB2. It was a beautiful knife, but wasn't for me, so I returned it. As of today, it is between the Sage 2, Sage 5, and Mantra. But, it will have to wait until... I can't wait no more :)
The jimping is not very satisfying to me on the sage series. Its too rounded compared to any other spyderco. Your finger just glides over it like it's not even there. Otherwise it feels good in hand. Mantra is nice edc. Its like a small plain sebenza to me. Will wear nicely and develop a patina. Feels like a quality product and the lockup looks secure. I was worried about a small looking lockbar but it feels very sturdy and adequate.

Ahhh...another PM2 fanboy. Welcome to the club.

And yes it is on the short list of Spyderco's best EDC knives. It is in my regular rotation.

Give the Sage 5 a try if you like the compression lock and want to try something from Taichung. The Sage 5 is one of my favorite Spydies that I own.
I agree and if he wants something a little bigger their is the Domino which in my opinion is one of their best all around Knives.

I sorta feel the opposite. I think the Taichung knives are priced very well. I think part of the reason they use Taichung is to keep the cost down. The GB's would be far more costly if made in Golden.

I am a big fan of their Taichung factory knives. I happen to like the linear sharp edges that most people dislike. I think that Spyderco leaves them that way on purpose

I read, I think on spyderco forum, that Spyderco underpriced their Golden made models to stay competitive; so maybe you're right, I guess only Sal or Eric would know for sure. We both know their $400 and up knives are made in Taichung, and they are magnificent! Ontario uses Taiwan for some of their folders, but these can be found for $30-$80. They don't approach models like the nirvana, or slyz folders, though the Cerberus folder by Ontario is showing some game.

The biggest surprise for me when I got my PM2 was the blade shape. You see it in pictures, but the slight variances in the leaf shaped blades still have a lot of different personalities so to say, and that thicker stock and full sweep to the tip appeals to me aesthetically and my style for cutting. In hand that wonky blade to handle ratio seems to matter less.

I think that many of the Spyders that have that "wonky" handle to blade ratio are some of the best. Think about how much control you have and also think about how much of that edge you really use in EDC type cutting chores.

That ratio is the secret to performance. Does it look funny? Maybe. Does it feel great? Hell yes. Does it cut? As they say in Forged in Fire...

"It will cut"

I was comparing my pm2s with the my military's, and it seemed to me the s110v Millie had less taper and thusly a thicker, more robust tip. I have to carry a thicker bladed backup at all times since someone invariably asks to borrow one, and I never know what they intend to use it for; people that don't carry their own knives don't have any respect, and they aren't going to offer to pay for a knife they've just shortened by using it to pry something.

Honestly the PM2 is such an amazing knife. I just can't stand that fragile tip! I could get it reground and profiled but that would make the blade even shorter.

It's hard to beat a PM2. Have you noticed their extreme popularity? That speaks volumes.

The manix2 is even "leafier" and the tip isn't as fragile. I still wouldn't loan it to somebody who hasn't bothered to bring their own! I'd hand them a gerber, or a crkt

Oh I love the Manix 2. I actually prefer it to the Para

What was it about the GB2 that you didn't care for ? The PM2 is an outstanding design , it's the Buck 110 of the 21st century imho. Knife enthusiasts that came of age in the mid 1960's know what a compliment this statement truly means. I'd go for the Sage 2 between the one's you listed. Good luck with your quest my friend.

Look at the Domino, it's almost like a gentleman's version of the PM2. Great knife,I bought all three colors. One of the two knives EDC is either a PM2 or a Domino. Luv them both.

i named this thread pm2 suprise because it did just that it suprised me. Ive had it close to a year and havent carried until recently because i just reach for my cqc7 out of habbit.
Im not new to spyderco but im not as up on them as you guys probably are.
That said the ergos are very pleasent and its lite. One hand operation is great. It does every thing well. Its not the most expensive knife i have but im starting to think it may be one of the best.
It perfoms delicate task and some not so delecate task in my shop.
I dont know why this thing hasnt found its way in my pocket before but im glad it did.
Is this one of spydercos beat edc offerings? Until now ive only really had experience with the: delica, endura, manix and manix xl. Is the para1 or para3 similar to the 2?
Where could i look in the spyderco lime up to find something similar?
YouTube has a few videos on the difference between he 1 vs 2. PM2 is a much better knife.

The military is my favorite spyderco, so if you like the pm2, try the full size military. It's liner lock is capable enough for any task for which a folder is appropriate!

I don't remember. I really wanted M4, I wanted to try Taichung, and the GB2 is a looker. From what I recall, granted I only had it for few hours, it was the combination of the ergonomics and the action. It is a presonal thing.

Found a pic, just to remind me, in case I will want to try again...

I would, but the price has been keeping this one off my radar. Also, had some issues with XHP on a different model.

To keep with the spirit of this thread ;)
