PM2 with liner lock?

I just bought a used Spyderco. Seller did not know the model. It looks EXACTLY like a PM2, and measures exactly the same, but it has a liner lock instead of the usual compression.

It is not a PM1 -- the PM1 was also a compression lock and had some other features that distinguished it from the PM2 (like a much smaller lanyard hole).

S30V, has both designer marks -- a PM2 in every way except the lock. Any ideas?

Sure, that occurred to me, but who puts CF scales on a fake? Also, the spider and marks look perfect. I'll put a 10x loop on them later.

Thanks, Sal. I didn't pay much for it, since it was well-used, so I will just keep it to show people how good some of the fakes are.

Yea, but OP said "S30V, has both designer marks". Ganzo did not do that. Their PM2 copy says Ganzo and/or the Firebird logo and says 440C.

Okay, it is definitely a fake.

Nylon washers (which could be seen before disassembly).
Bronze lanyard tube.
Carbon steel.
All screws (except pivot), including clip screws, driven by a T6; pivot driven by a 2.5mm hex.

The Spyder was amazingly good. Only with 8x or 10x magnification could I see that the triangle in the head was not quite right.

The clip was way off, if it was the one that came on the knife. When I tried to move it to another location I realized the other location was not threaded. It was drilled and looked great, but it was not threaded. No jimping, top or bottom.

The Sal mark was pretty good, until you looked close, but the Eric was over-sized and just not at all right, at 8x.

However, I did get one bit of good news today -- I bought what was said to be a Persistence, which is one of my favorites even though it is just 8Cr13MoV, but realized it was a Tenacious when it arrived and was "too big." That's okay, I did not have one and now I'm glad I do! It is on the left below, beside its little brother, the Persistence. I guess I just like liner locks! :)

The "PM2 Liner Lock" will become a letter opener that I will use to show folks some of the ways to spot a fake.

We need to make the importation of goods with pilfered trademarks and/or patents a serious crime. Maybe put some of the folks laid off in the WuFlu shutdown to work in Customs!

Hi Blade_Hunter,

It is a serious crime not only in infringement but also fraud as the steels marked are not the steel used. Chinese counterfeiters commit hundreds of crimes every day. Catching them and stopping them is more difficult than it might appear.

Did you get that knife off "the big auction site", from seller lothe****, from MS? I saw one that looked exactly like that one just over a week ago now. I messaged the seller letting them know that it was a fake spyderco. The seller told me they were unaware if it was legit or not, and if I was worried I should not bid on it. They did not remove it, and it sold, listed as a "Spyderco Knife Liner Lock". They were made aware before the sale occurred, if it's the one I saw.

u.w.

Thanks, willie, but I was aware it was probably fake when I bid, and then I could not be sure until I took it apart. Sal said they never made a PM2 with a liner lock, but I was not sure it was not some other model. For what I paid I am okay with it.

Have you tried to get EBay from selling them? I have told them there were fakes and they just say they will investigate and nothing comes of it. What actions are/have you taken to fight the fakes with EBay, Amazon etc.

It baffles me why you insisted on buying a fake PM2 after knowing it is a counterfeit? The majority here probably do not need any education on what a fake linerlock PM2 looks like. We'd be happier if you just return the fake PM2 and no longer buy any counterfeits from now on.

I would return that thing or trash it. I would not feel right owning something that rips off of one of my favorite companies. Keeping it to show people is just going to advertise fakes.
