MA, NY, CA are common states you see in blade/weapon catalogs and sites that sellers will not ship certain items to, but often this has little to with law.
My understanding, if I recall correctly, is that while there has never been any laws about shipping to these states other than the Federal switchblade law, there have instances where the bat**** DA office in these states have tried to come after the seller in cases where the buyer used an item to commit a crime, or that some entity within these states attempted to sue the seller under similar circumstances.
This may also be misunderstanding on the part of the seller about local laws. The big one that I see at lot is the complete misinterpretation of laws on concealed carry vs. possession. Sometimes the seller is too thick to understand the difference. But these three states aren't exactly known for their tolerate attitudes towards weapons. Sometimes IL is added in there too.
