Pocket Anxiety!!!

Ok... I went to a knife show this weekend and bought a little BM770 to carry at the office. Now I don't know about you guys but I was checking my pocket all day -- when I got up from a seat, or walking or in a crowd -- and this was only a $120-170 knife. How do you guys do it carrying around $300 Sebenza's or even $400-600 dollar customs like the ones I saw this weekend. I would have a nervous breakdown worrying about losing the little gem.

Any tips on coping with pocket anxiety? Does it eventually wear off? Or will I be checking the pocket for the rest of my nice knife carrying life?

Thanks...JT

I gather this is your "first" knife, yes? Give it two or three weeks and you won't check it constantly just like you don't check your wallet, keys, etc., constantly. It just takes a while to get used to. Soon you'll feel a different kind of pocket anxiety if you don't have a knife there. Me - I have to carry at least three knives otherwise I get anxious and jumpy and irritable, kinda like if I haven't had my necessary prescription doses of caffeine or nicotine. It's a long, shiny, sharp path you're on, be careful!

Checking your pockets will become second nature. Besides, my Sebbie likes the little pats it gets.

The 'little pats' as Paul calls them very quickly become unconsious. A week ago, to my horror, a little pat turned up no Sebenza. :( I had used it in the morning before work, rinsed it, and laid it to dry on the stove...whew!

You'll get used to it...maybe. :D

I worry with my Mini-AFCK, because the clip seems a little bit loose. However, I really only worry about that while wearing shorts because it's more likely to fall out when I'm wearin my cargo shorts than with my jeans. I don't worry about my CRKT M16 at all because it's got a strong clip and a checkered thumbstud that kind of catches on my pocket and keeps it in one place. I am worried about the LCC that'll be arriving soon. I don't know if I'll be able to bear carrying it without worrying too much about it falling out or something.

Nothing's more horrible than losing a knife. Well, maybe losing a limb or a relative, but you get the point. I believe my Spydie Native is in someone else's pocket right now. At least, I hope so. Been a while since I lost it, and I hope they appreciated what they found. (I lost it inside an REI) I can only imagine what it would be like to lose a $100+ knife. Gives me the shivers.

Took me a while to get over the loss. Mostly, what you need to do is check check and recheck. I probably check for my knife 3 or 4 times an hour, when I'm not using it. If you have deep pockets - don't use the clip. Otherwise, carry a backup - that way, if you lose it, you can think, gee whiz, glad I brought the backup along. :)

I always check my wallet, keys, knife, etc. I give them a pat to make sure they're there every few minutes or every time I'm in a situation where I could lose them. It's just taking good care of your stuff. It's a better idea to check all the time than to have to spend more money to replace something because you failed to pay attention.

JGardner: Don't worry about the LCC. You'll KNOW when this knife is in your pocket, and you'll darn sure KNOW if it leaves your pocket. It's not a little bitty thing, you can feel it in there. You'll understand when it arrives. Or maybe you already do. :) At any rate, I wouldn't worry too much about it falling out in the first place, the clip's pretty good.

I never worry since I stopped using clips :)

Nice rig. I wear Docker style pants all the time and always feel my knives aren't very secure since the side type pockets don't really hold clips well. This might be the solution I've been looking for. Thanks. -Rick

Hi JT
Aren't these guys funny? I love coming to the forum - it makes me feel normal! Everywhere else I go I get the funny looks/comments when I pull out a blade, freak out because I forgot my knife etc. You're behaviout sounds totally normal man. Like the guys said the 'pocket patting' becomes unconscious. When I get a new knife I am like a new parent -every 30 seconds checking on the little un, making sure they are still there and ok, it's ok daddy's here and as time wears on it becomes more subconscious. Of cours people at the office may notice a new tick you have developed :) A lot depends on the clip or carry method I have a CS Voyager that clips so tight it has ruined my pants pocket but never had to worry about the little fella, others are a little looser and I check more often. Like the guys said, you realize you are on a downward spiral and things will only get worse. Welcome to the world of the Knife Knut!

You never stop patting your pocket while you use a clip. I have one of the S1 cases from TAD along with some others - these help with the problem.

Sometimes it is nice to carry the knife loose, just to have the excuse to pat it - especiallly if it is a new friend.....:D

Regards,

Ed

I have never lost a high end knife. The closest I ever came was at a ball game when the clip on my small Sebenza broke and it fell out of my pocket.Fortunately, I patted my sides before I left the seat and I found my knife. Needless to say, Chris Reeve was very good about replacing the clip.

I never worry since I stopped using clips :)

Friends do not let friends use clips on their custom knives.

A nice snug G2 sheath from Mr. Graley is not only secure, but fashionable as well!

:)

I always carry the same configuration of accessories in my pockets -- keys in the front left, knife in the front right, comb in the back left, wallet in the back right. Every time I get up from chair, go out to my car, get out of my car, or enter/leave a building, I pat all four pockets to verify that everything I carry is with me.

I don't do this consciously; the only time I even realize I do it at all is when something isn't in its proper pocket. It's a good habit to get into. More than once this past winter I realized I'd dropped my car key while entering the building and juggling my briefcase and the door keys to the office. If not for that patting habit, they might have been lost until Spring.

Interesting Razor... I never carry anything valuable in a back pocket, that's just asking for trouble, especially in large crowds. I've even learned (when in a swirling crowd) to take my pack off my back (day pack) and hang it in front of me. For me its keys in the front left, wallet in the front right. I don't have any pocket knives that don't have either a belt sheath (like my buck 110) or a clip, so knives don't typically ride in my pocket other than temporarily because I've just used them and can't put them back IWB at that moment.

I use a clip, carry IWB, usually a Sebenza if I'm not wearing a fixed blade, and have never lost it. Brushing that area of my hip with my hand every so often - especially when I get in and out of seats or take a jacket off - has become second nature as has taking the knife out and putting it temporarily in a pocket if I must un-tuck my shirt. That seems to be the most dangerous maneuver for IWB carriers like me. Has never been a problem if the shirt works itself un-tucked through natural motions, but if I pull it out, the knife sometimes comes with it, or used to until I learned to grab it first.

Do you ever get over it?

Had my Delica for 2yrs, still feel for it when I'm doing anything.
Had my Cricket since march, carry IWB, and forget it's there till I need it.
Got my latest on saturday morning and my hands always on it like a guard dog protecting it's master.

After a while it gets subconcious, but I still feel for it when I'm doing anything active. This also allows me to wipe off the sweat on the Delica(I carry small of back, right of spine, IWB).

I can normally pass off checking for the delica as a back scratch, and just hit it...

I never worry about it. If I lose a knife, well, it's just a knife right? I can get another, right? It's no big thing, right?

Wait, wait, my knife is not in my pocket, DAMN, where is it? I gotta go.

Interesting Razor... I never carry anything valuable in a back pocket, that's just asking for trouble, especially in large crowds.

Sitting on my behind in the office it isn't an issue; if I'm going to be in large crowds I make other arrangements (up to and including decoy wallets when necessary). The size of my regular wallet really precludes its carry anywhere else; it's fat and thick thanks to all the crap I carry around in order to feel prepared. (I have a separate kit full of essentials in one of those Pock-Its utility pouches in my briefcase, too.)

I don't have any pocket knives that don't have either a belt sheath (like my buck 110) or a clip, so knives don't typically ride in my pocket other than temporarily because I've just used them and can't put them back IWB at that moment.

I always carry my clip-equipped knives clipped inside the right front pocket of my pants. It's the only way I'm comfortable; IWB carry tends to cause too much scuffing damage to the upholstery of my office chair.
