Pocket Carry breakthrough

This was an “aha” moment for me but this has likely been done before. I still wanted to share it though. Like many of you I pocket carry my knives and use the pocket clip to keep it in place. Sometimes I don’t want it riding on my pocket but I don’t like it in my pocket because it usually falls horizontal and is irritating when I sit down.

The “aha” moment came when I sat down to sew some mods on my edc bag. Being able to sew is a really useful skill and as I was creating a new pocket on my bag I thought why don’t I do something similar to my pockets. I took off my pants and sewed some internal dividers in my right front and back pockets that are just the right width for my average knife. They work well. They keep the knives upright in either pocket and I can either put them all the way in or use the pocket clips to keep them more accessible. The added bones is the knives stay separated from things like phones, car keys and change.

This may not work for all pants but if you know how to sew or know someone who does then I think it’s worthwhile to look into it if you like to keep your knives a certain way in your pockets when carrying them.

Yes but my way requires me to turn in my man card and admit I know how to use a sewing machine. :)
Hey the ol mountain men and cowboys had to sew their own clothes and such. You could turn up the manliness by using buck stitch and bang in a rivet or two . Lol

Interesting. Any issue fishing the knife out of your front pocket if it's sheathed in the pocket liner? I had been carrying a super small Serge bean copy for a year and a week ago switched to a small Sebenza 21 (clipless in the pocket). So far I haven't had any issues with the knife laying flat, but maybe a small half or 2/3 knife length pocket liner stitch might keep it a bit more situated. I ride a motorcycle as my only transportation, and I've been a bit more cautious about making sure the knife is locked deep in my pocket before I go zipping off on my bike.

When I use my sewing machine I tell myself it’s an industrial shop tool. No different than a bandsaw table saw or lathe. My man card is still intact.

On Hammockforums.net they call it a “thread injector”.
My smaller knives have lanyards so they help in pulling the knife out.

Way to go !
Actually I have seen someone else here say they do a similar thing (or have it done) .
I've almost bought some 511 pants a couple of times because they have a separate pocket that will work like this.
But I'm not a cargo pants sort (too much wind resistance from all those pockets for cycling to work). I wouldn't mind a pocket like yours though.
I've done a ton of sewing (Frost Line Kits mostly) (on my treadle as well as by hand with a sewing awl). I might give it a go.

I've even completely resewn tubular race bike tires (two needle hand sewing) (before I finally learned the secret of putting a new tube in 'em without all that mucking about) . . . for all you very old school bicycle people.
Some one might say why ? We are talking about tires that can't be had for less than ~$180 each US today. Worth a bit of work to keep 'em running a while longer.

Navy Parachute Riggers are taught to sew, it’s a handy skill. The skill itself isn’t feminine, it depends on what you do with it. I’d like to be competent at it, but I wouldn’t be making dresses or anything.

  1. I’m sure someone out there has a fetish for watching a man sew without any pants on
  2. Does this mod limit the use of the pocket as a hand warming area?

I took my cell-phone to a shoe-shop along with three pair of Levis and showed them where I wanted the left rear pocket to be sewn into "two" pockets. Now my phone is nice and snug along the left side of my pocket. I had the scary happening of it slipping out of my pocket twice while at restaurants...realized it as I was leaving...and figured that I didn't want it to happen again.
There is just a single sewn line running down along the side of the phone.
Obviously, something similar would be interesting for your knife-pocket...

I was sewing commando.

It does make the rest of the pocket a little smaller. Also depends on the pants.

Real men (like Rambo) sew up their own wounds.

I think we have the ultimate, and most efficient answer :
Just sew a pocket into ones skin.
Casts "Cry once" in a whole new light.
The latest thing in Cyber-implants. ;)

The whole time sewing it in you can holler "I'm a Man ! "I'm a Man ! "
See Tom at about 13 to 15 minutes in . . .

Sew a pocket... Into one’s skin...

I've heard sewing described as welding fabric, and welding is as manly as anything.

That being said, I'm not great with sewing but I know how, it's very useful, and making things is awesome. Hell, I even know how to knit. Need a new fleece lined knitted camo handwarmer thing that'll keep your paws and your snickers warm while hunting ducks? Yeah, I can make that, and I'm not apologetic about it.

No need at all to turn in your "man card." IMO, knowing how to do something like sewing is one more skill that allows you to do more for yourself. I wish I could sew, and will probably learn how at some point, at least to a rudimentary degree.
