Pocket Carry of Single Blade in a Slip

When you carry your traditional folder in a slip, which end goes into the slip first?

Simply a curiosity poll, my friends. I prefer the lighter, slimmer single-bladed pocket knife. I always carry it pivot end down into the slip first. The other way just feels wrong to me. :D

The other way, joint out, negates one of the advantages in carrying a pocketknife in a slip. Keeping the joint in the open end allows exposure to lint and other things.

huh i did not consider that. mostly because my slip has a clip for the scrubs days when I remember to grab a knife.

On my foldover slips, I put the blade to the seam for a looser fit or the backspring to the seam for a tighter fit.

.........whatever is the slimmest end, that always goes in first.

If equal both ends but shiny bolster, that goes in first for protection.

If none of the above, pivot end in first to keep that better away from lint and the like

Using CollectorsKnives slips I stick the knives that I do carry in them so the butt sticks up (pivot at bottom). Since the butt is typically the wider end and the sips get tighter towards the bottom, it's far easier to get the knife out that way rather than the other way. Plus, as mentioned above, the pivot is better protected from lint and crud.

I use the same method (pivot end into the slip first) for the same reasons: 1) ease of extraction and 2) protection of pivot.

This, 100%. All good points made.

IMO, Planterz nailed it -- wider end up and narrower end down into the slip.

On another note, is it common practice to wet-mold leather slips for individual knives?

Pivot end goes in the slip with single blades and jacks. Main blade end goes in first on 2 blade single springs (pen knives) and double end jacks.

I don’t use knife purses :D. I have tried it though after getting a few with Northwoods knives and just realized that I don’t need the extra material taking up space in my pocket.

- me neither..........to carry, anyway. But do use them for storing and 'keeping to one side'.

Same principle though (ie. post#6) for this, which is my edc...

This is my reasoning exactly.

That's the way I carry in my Case belt sheath that you sell. It's a great belt sheath, too.

I’m one of the extreme minority at this point (seems for good reason); agree with the arguments and think I’ll try out AW’s approach:

Pivot end goes in the slip with single blades and jacks. Main blade end goes in first on 2 blade single springs (pen knives) and double end jacks.

:D:cool:

I prefer Pen construction, joint at each end so it's irrelevant ;) Don't carry them in slips, pouches or sheathes but like Chui Chui they're very useful for storing a decent knife in or transporting them somewhere :)

Guess I'm in the minority. I have typically carried pocket knives loose in my pocket, but since I received my Laguiole a few months ago, I always carry it in the leather pouch it came with. I carry it with the tip down and with the pivot end up:

Two reasons: (1) the pouch was obviously intended to be used this way; and (2) that is how I received it from the maker. I have had no problems.

But if I carried a different knife in a pouch or slip, I might carry it the other way. For example, I would probably carry a trapper with the tip up and the pivot side down, like I carry it in my belt sheath.
