Pocket clip hooking onto coat...

I had an issue while carrying a knife clipped to my pant pocket a while ago. I had a coat on, which reached down past my pant pocket and as I pulled up my coat to put my keys in my jeans pocket, the clip hooked onto the inside fabric of the coat and the knife was pulled out and fell down on the floor. This could really have happened at a better time, since there where many rowdy teenagers around and a guy claiming to be a police officer came and gave me a hard time about it. I knew I was in the right carrying a pocket knife, which I calmly explained to the guy, who eventually gave up, but it did not feel good to have the knife fall out accidentally like that. I could see the same thing happening while temporarily squatting down and getting up or while running or even walking fast. Then you might not notice it if you're walking on soft ground or if in a noisy surrounding. I'm really thinking twice before carrying a knife clipped to my pocket after this. I do it occasionally, but not for everyday. Has anyone else had this problem?

I have gone back and forth with pocket clips over the years for similar reasons. I have lost two expensive knives that best I can figure snagged and fell out without me noticing.

I gave up on pocket clips for several years preferring to pocket carry a slip joint or carry my knives in a belt sheath if I needed more knife than a slippie.

In the woods I carry my knife in a neck lanyard as it's just too easy to not notice a knife slipping out of your pocket.

I have only recently begun to again carry a clip knife. I am carrying a Benchmade Griptillian with a Contego deep carry clip installed. Thus far it carries deep and snug enough for me to be confident it will stay in place.

Short answer, you are not alone and there are definite disadvantages to carrying clipped.

No offense, but you can always remove the pocket clip and just carry the knife in your pocket. I do this with several of mine or just carry it in your pocket with the clip attached, just don't use the clip. Just a thought.

Was it a deep carry clip? I've noticed most deep carry clips come from the factory as more of "pocket hangers" with very little tension. I like my clips to hold on to my pocket with firm tension so I usually increase the tension on my deep carry clips, but I most definitely prefer normal clips because they always hold on better.

The Benchmade deep carry clips have been great IMHO, I add more tension to them and have had zero snag issues unlike my spyderco's....

The large "spoon" the end of the spyderco clip sits higher off of the knife than other clips and snags easily on my winter coat (longer jacket) resulting in the knife being pulled out of my pocket. :thumbdn: Almost lost my ZDP endura a few times on hikes. :thumbdn::grumpy:

I have never had mine catch on anything but I have scratched up my sink with them.

None taken. I do mainly use other carry methods now. Usually in a horizontal carry leather sheath in the front, next to the belt buckle, very good IMO (I make them myself). Sometimes, I keep the knife in a zipped up inside jacket pocket. The thing is I really like pocket clip carry as well. It's super comfortable and super accessible. Like I said, I do it sometimes, but mainly with a tucked shirt and no jacket or clipped to a leg pocket.

Yes to cranking on more tension for some clips.

Yes to a lanyard hanging off the edge of a pocket.

Yes to a sheath or pouch also.

I have as a side note, snagged, bent, mauled or otherwise fouled all options. Squeezing through a door or around a corner, sliding in or out of a vehicle. Any time you're moving in tight spaces or have extra gear on there's a risk.

I agree that the Benchmade deep carry clip is fantastic. And you can always pinch with some pliers to increase the tension on any clip. Deep carry will always REDUCE the chances of snagging on something and losing your knife. Of course the handle length can also contribute to loss.
