Hey...cool beans! You were right Mike!
Goose.
WARNING WILL ROBINSON! WARNING! WARNING...THIS THREAD HAS BEEN HIJACKED!!!
Decisions, decisions. Life is good. Choices are good.
This year's BCCI drop point or a 172? Steak or chicken? Bud or Coors? Blonde or brunette? Mayo or Miracle Whip?
Hmmm...well, this isn't a 172 thread, but my comments about this tool are in line with other posts I have read in the archives of Buckdom.
Date on package: 02/06/06
Thought "cool...a recent model...maybe some of the items have been resolved with this year's issue".
Wrong.
Painted on logos...aka: Alaskan kind of crap. Price point for this could be stamped or etched. The "C" in Buck came with part of the top already gone. Double CHEESEYburger please...
Locking liner overlap: WAY less than 50%. Maybe even less than 33% and closer to 20%. Scary and concerning.
Open/Close: smooth as butter
Clip: nicely done, but would have preferred it on the other end (Sirus style)
Thuimbhole: should be beveled or use a stud
Blade Geometry: chisel tip is not uniform on both sides. Alaskan 110, Sirus 298GY, 560 XLT-Ti, BrokeBackMtn 111...all perfect.
Blade: thin as a thread (good, bad, I dunno...yet) Sharpest knife I've ever bought stock.
Other things: It is lighter than a feather, great overall finish and workmanship. Awesome balance closed and opened.
Asthetics: Beautiful
I do like the knife but am so glad that you guys pointed me to the less than $150 price point. Guess that's relative...once a dude said "Goose, I used that folding knife in the kitchen to scrape off some burs on my motorcycle frame". I went

! Told him that is a $60 knife and to use a $10 file that is right in the tool box. His response was, "you paid $60 for a KNIFE?" (AG Russell Camp Knife ATS-34)...but he didn't even know how to close a 110...so I understood. Beauty, utility, and price are all in the eyes of the beholder.
Will this 172 end up in my EDC rotation? Being used to the heft and solid feel of the 110 and, recently, the 298, this 172 just seems that it'll fail...thin blade, scary locking liner overlap, weight. Maybe I'm just a chicken (one that doesn't leave trax though!!) but I get the same level of confidence with this that I do with my UrbanCowboy 513. The Alaskan and 298GY knives are a hard act to follow in my EDC script. I'll let ya know. Plan to carry it for a week or two.
Bottomline, I like the 172 Buck/Mayo for the price I paid...but am somewhat underwhelmed over the, seemingly, little things that I find are better done on less expensive Bucks.
Budweiser, Steak, and Blondes...Always.
And Miracle Whip... For Now.
I'll have some cheese with my whine, sharp and not mild cheddar, please...
Goose.
