Pocket clip on Buck/Strider

Anyone know someone who can move the clip on my Buck/Strider to the correct (tip-down carry) :) position? This person would need some experience working on knives, as this job presents a couple of problems.

For one, Buck went cheap on the mounting of the clip. The liner directy under the area where the clip screws into the G10 is cut away; that is, the clip screws only go through the G10, not the liner. To move the clip, both the G10 and the titanium liner have to be drilled and the titanium, at least, has to be tapped for the screws. Secondly, the factory clip mounts with three screws, positioned in a triangle. Because of the spread of the screws, the factory clip will probably not fit on the pivot end of the knife, unless it is positioned below the pivot - this would leave a lot of the knife sticking out of my pocket, and would be ugly also. Finally, it would help to have an assortment of clip screws handy. If the screws are to go through the G10 and thread into the liner, they would have to be longer than the factory screws. I wouldn't know where to begin looking for small screws like that around here.

TIA for the help/advice.

Klesk,

just to correct one point you made, Buck did not go cheap on the fastening of their clip. The screws don't go into the liner, but they are in there very good. There are flanged inserts int he screw holes, with the flanges being underneath the scale. It would take a heck of a lot of force to tear the pocket clip out of the handle.

About the mods, try posting a link to this thread in Shop Talk. There are a few guys out there who modify folders, and Shop Talk is a great place to find these people.

Yeah, if you look at the knife more carefully, you'll see that the clip screws go into threaded inserts that are in the G10. There is a circular hole cut into the titanium to let the tips of the screw pass through, but you could cut the screws short instead.

The real problem, if you want to use a similar arrangement as Buck's for the threaded inserts, is that you need to make them stick in the G10. I'm not sure how they do this.

One more thing. I think you could put the clip above and to the left of the pivot area. If you do this, you would need to cut away a small section of the clip to let it lie flat against the scale. But all the screws would be able to be screwed into the G10.

Crayola: Thanks for the tip and info. Although I have to retract that "cheap" comment I made, I still would prefer the clip to screw into the liner. I've seen other manufacturers do this, and on a knife like the Buck/Strider, which is otherwise built like a tank, I would expect the clip to be bulletproof also.

APB: Yeah, that is the problem that I touched on. Unless the person doing the work has the equipment/ability to replicate Buck's clip mounting technique, the liner would have to be drilled and tapped for the clip screws. Not sure who I can trust for this work. Thanks for the input.
