Just wondering out of pure stupid curiosity. The Knives Eating Jeans thread got me wondering. I see two methods for inserting a pocket clipped knife into your pocket. There are what I call the Shove and Jam method and the Pull and Slide method. Guessing the Shove and Jam method is a greater cause of jean pocket fraying and ripping.

It's a stupid question with no real value in the results but just curious what method people tend to use? Or maybe there is another popular way?

Feel free to suggest other terms for these methods. LOL!

Shove and jam. Although, if the clip is tight from the factory, I do bend it out a bit to try and minimize tearing the seam of my pockets.

Shove and Jam, but I have a CRK Hawk clip on the way that I'm going to try out. That would be closer to the Pull and Slide, except you push down on the back of the clip to get the clip to raise up.

It's different for each knife, with carbon fiber or titanium scaled knives I'll do the shove and jam because it slides in and out of the pocket much easier.

I do the pull and slide with knives that have a lot of clip retention. My mini Ritter is like that(with the stock clip installed).

Depends on the clip style and the pants but usually I gravitate toward a wider and longer clip so I can just shove it in my pocket with minimal pocket wear.
Those skinny milled clips just destroy my pockets.

I like my pocket clips somewhat loose. I will spring or loosen them so that they slide in and out of my pocket with no significant effort. Never lost a knife; but then I don't do handstands either ;)

I mostly pull and slide but as stated in the above mentioned thread I often am in dress pants so I do try and minimize the damage to my pockets.

That is highly personal question!:D I do which ever feels better at the time!;)

I also pull and slide as I find majority of my pocket clips to be rather tight and I don't want to lose the screws, would be minor tightening down frequently, and bending the clip can be such a pain I typically over bend it making it fairly free.

Lift and slide ? ? ? ?
You can do that ? ? ?
see and just when I was going to take my exams (again . . . stop laughing back there . . . six tries is more normal than you think) . . . to get my Cool Guy club card.

This.
I live in Colorado and wear a range of pants from light summer shorts to lined winter work pants and heavy sweat pants. I adjust the clip for the sweat pants / winter pants and usually it has enough left in the clip to get a little bit of hold on my summer pants pocket. If not I don't carry that knife with the thick pants or I change clips. Think Cold Steel Holdout III (you remember that old thread / long pocket clip from Holdout One put on Holdout Three; long clip works on anything ).
YeeoW that is a short clip ! Been a while since I looked at it. Madness, pure madness. Yes I cut the slot in it trying to make it usable / weaker spring rate.

then there is the perfectly lovely (usability wise) Spyderco wire clip.
Short, light, able to take THICK work pants with LARGEish YKK zippers on the pockets . . . in stride.
I don't think I ever even adjusted it. Always jam and cram with the wire clip of course; no problem . . . hmmmmmm lift up on the pocket clip before slipping on my pocket . . . hmmmmmmm
No come to think of it I HAVE done that; probably without thinking. I just hate having to do it.
No really

I am suddenly channelling Lynn Thompson . . . my key board is no longer in my control aaaaaaaaaahhheeeeeeeee . . . . .

Hi Cats :
Big LT here . . .
I just wanted to say that I designed the Holdout III (the tiny Holdout) to be clipped in a shirt pocket next to your tactical pen. It is very flat, thin and light enough that it works well for this. Remember they still spike through a steel toed boot with ease.

aaaaaaaaahhhhhhwwwwwWHat THE ? ? ? ?

It happened again didn't it ?
I'm warning you all . . . if you watch CS YouTube videos this sort of thing can happen.
Not so bad as long as you find a continuous source for pig carcasses.
I'm a little tired . . .

Shove and jam.
I've only got my Buck 482 and a couple smaller blades I've made suspension clips for, but haven't had any pocket damage.
Every single day of carrying the 482 for 2 years gave me zero issues.

I'm sure it has nothing to do with how I insert them, but the fact that what I have just isn't rough on my pockets.

Pull and Slide for me! And if a knife has to much texture on the handle I tend to buff the finnish to make it smoother, to minimize pocket wear.

I don't use the clip. Some knives I remove it (CRKT small ripple, Spyderco dragonfly2).

Too many cases of losing or almost losing knives clipped to my pocket.

Only reason I leave a clip on is sometime it provides a good purchase for deploying the blade.

As for carry, I just put the knife in my pocket.

Geeesh! There always has to be one party pooper! :p

This is highly scientific and knife life altering data I'm collecting here!
