Pocket clips: tip up or tip down carry?

Tip down if in the pocket!

I've had several knives have the thumb stud catch and open as it came out of the pocket! NOT a cool move, luckily I've not gotten cut yet.
Small Sebenza and the BM940 both have done this not just once but often, so be careful everyone!

Both options work for me, but once you get used to one style of carry, switching can be awkward, at least the first few times you open the knife or put it back in your pocket.

Up. With tip down, the pocket clip gets in the way. I've gotten rid of all my knives with tip down. I probably wouldn't have traded for my Sebenza if it were tip down. Just dont like tip down. It a shame more manufacturers dont make it reversible from tip up to tip down to side to side.

Really don't get why so many people think tip down is safer. I've had a couple of blades partially open in my pocket in the tip down position. If I had reached down for something in the bottom I would have gotten cut. Tip up for me if I have the choice.

UP
IMO, it's faster, and safer.
No longer own a tip-down knife, except one that was a gift from a friend, and it no longer has the clip on it.
Tip down clips interfere with the grip. They ruin the looks of a knife too, IMO. I cringe every time I see a custom with bolsters with a clip on them:barf:

I guess more people like tip-down, though???
Most folders I see, both factory and custom are backwards...I mean...tip-down:p

This came up the other night. I took my tip up lg. Sebenza and my tip down lg. TNT and tested both. Not accounting for the Mayo hole vs. the CRK stud, the tip down TNT was far easier (and faster) to open than my lg. Sebenza. (It should be noted that the Sebenza has been owned for years and has been opened many more times by me that my TNT.)

Tip down works for me!

Guess that settles it, then:p
Chocolate ice cream is definitely better than vanilla ice cream, though!

Michael...faster from the pocket, or in the hand? Just curious.
I'll take a hole, anyday, but none of my current folders have one.
This is like religion, no way everybody's going to see things the same.

Note to self:
Must edit spelling in other post, don't have any gifts from fre-inds:rolleyes:

btw, my tip-up EDC is faster than your tip-down TNT:mad: I'll see you at noon!

I carry my folders clipped at the back of my pocket. With tip up, this puts the blade back against the seam. Tip down would leave the whole pocket for the blade to open in. It has happened to me once, it won't happen again.

Being around SHARP things all day long (I sharpen tools when I am not making knives.....tools for the woodworking industry...like 24" planer knives in a 4 unit set!!!!!!! 4x24" long RAZOR BLADES :( )
SO I AM SPEAKING OUT OF EXPERIENCE>>>>>>> getting a bad cut can RUIN your life! You can cut tendons and nerves in your hand and fingers and be screwed up for good.....so having a knife that can be OPEN with the point UP in your pocket is something that gives me the CREEPS!!! I have seen WAY TOO MANY custom knives that you can shake open VERY easily by just wiggling it while holding it in the horizontal plane......I refuse to put a clip on the butt......so does Pat Crawford........ :)
Be careful out there!!!
PS-dont ever take a knife to a gun fight!! :)

Tip up.

I have one folder with tip down, might try to change it to a tip up.

How 'bout this? Get a spydie dyad. You're tip up AND tip down. Now, can't we all get along?
G.
But...if I have to choose...Down.

C4:
DOWN is faster/safer!

Obviously you've never seen the Emerson wave in action.:D

I don't understand this argument that tip up is unsafe. All my clip knives are tip up, NONE of them have opened on their own. And besides, the blade is against the pocket edge to keep it closed.

You've never stabbed yourself in the fingertip with a tip-up folder, then. Those of us who have are not eager to repeat the experience.

I've carried a Spyderco/Walker Lt/Wt for years Tip up. I never cut myself it never opened in my pocket I'm convinced Tip Up is better and more natural. For several months I've been carrying a Cuda EDC Tip Down, I love the knife, I love the way the clip is designed, but it's on the wrong end, the pivot end. You know what, I've gotten used to it?

In Dec. I had my first Custom liner lock made by Art Washburn, No Clip I didn'nt want to mess up the stag scales or the SS Raindrop pattern Damascus bolsters. Besides I wanted a Graley leather sheath for it, and guess what, I wanted it for Tip Up carry? Why? Because I wanted to show off the stag butt and it would be backwards the other way.

I bought my second handmade liner lock from Kit Carson at Blade Show and I was really happy Kit didn't put a clip on it. I still want to send it to G2 for another sheath, I just can't bare to part with it yet.

Guess which way I want this knife to carry? ;)
