On small knives I like no clip or a deep carry. For example, I like that my PT CC has no clip, but I also love the deep carry clip on my protech PT. On larger knives, it depends on the size and shape of the knife and how easy it is to access the knife. My mini commander carries nicely even though it sticks up. My old 0562 was probably the best carrying larger knife I have had, and it was very deep. Most often I carry with no clip.

I position the clip RS tip up, then carry it in a sheath
It's just there so I can position it in my hand with out looking.

If the ergonomics are not good aka I notice it in use.
I'll take it off.

I like having enough knife above my pocket to easily remove it.

I know I am in the minority but I feel Sal got it right years ago.

I think it's right on those knives. My hands aren't very big, so tip down puts the Millie in the right position for opening. I'd have to adjust if it was tip up.

Flippers are the only knives where the orientation concerns me. Not a big fan of pulling half open knives out of my pocket.

I like pocket clips that are actually usuable. I recently bought a Cold Steel XL Voyager with a clip that is so stiff that you cannot attach it. A call to customer service told me to put a nickel under the clip overnight, and that would do the trick. Well, it's been a couple of days now, and I still can't clip it to my jeans. I'm thinking that I'll have to remove the clip and bend it with pliers. It's not like the company just started making folders this year. You shouldn't have to go to so much trouble to make a new knife functional for carry. By the way, I own many Cold Steel products, and this is the only problem that I have had. Apparently the company is aware of the tight clips and chooses to keep sending them out this way.

You should do one of these on carved Ti clips, or bent metal clips. I hate carved Ti clips, but would be interested to see if others like them.

I have a knife with a milled Ti pocket clip and it works fine and looks nice..

I like my hawk clip a lot even though I thought I wouldn't when I first got it.

^ I have one milled clip that works fine, the rest are awful compared to a simple bent metal clip

Depends on the knife. But for EDC I think their is no better than the Spyderco wire clip :D Not only is it discrete and comfortable, but the deeper the knife is in your pocket, the harder it is to lose.

I lean towards the deep carry side. I would rather dig a little deeper in my pocket than lose my knife while im sliding around underneath a piece of equipment at work. Kind of situational I guess.

It's uncommon for me to note or care about the design of a pocket clip. A pocket clip that keeps all but 1/2" (~13mm) of the knife below the line of my pocket is all I really want as far as depth goes. Just as important, however, is the design and placement of the clip - for example, the Kershaw Junkyard dog not only has nearly 3/4 of an inch sticking out when pocketed, but also commits the cardinal sins of being being ridiculous and strictly tip-down.

Couldn't agree more. It's a fine work knife due to its robust construction. But having reached into my pocket to find a tip up carry knife open after crawling around under a house (at work) and being bit pretty hard, I don't carry it or any other tip up knives anymore.

And worse, that clip design is AWFUL. I was annoyed when I saw it in person the first time and then go used to it. But since I never carry it in the rotation, it now looks to me to be nothing more than a gas station knife. What a shame. It is a good worker, but ugly as a mud fence.

that makes a lot of sense, i didn't even think of those situations.
but if that's an issue, doesn't the clip itself catch on things?

tip down only drives me up the wall.
i love my Kershaw Blackout but carries top down left side only with a massive clip which is an ergonomic nightmare.
great knife collecting dust because of one small thing. :(

It depends on the angle of the clip tip. It’s not to bad if it’s pointing back towards the knife a bit. I throw an mxg clip on my hard use knives, the end of the clip does point outward but they hold up to the abuse and stay in pocket quite nicely so far.

Need enough to grab onto imo.

The only way I can pull a knife out is to grab onto the part sticking out of the pocket. My jeans are generally tight enough that I can't get much of my hand into the pocket with the knife. If I just put a few fingertips in my pocket there isn't a way to grab the knife. I've tried putting a fingertip on the bottom end of the clip and pulling the knife out but to get good grip on the clip usually means pushing the clip tighter against the cloth and keeping the knife from coming out. Otherwise my fingertip frequently slips off of the clip. If the clip keeps me from pulling the knife out then having it clipped to my pocket is no advantage.

I feel ya for sure, it’s all personal preference. One of the things that makes the knife community so unique and enjoyable to talk about with fellow “knife people”.

Agreed. You get to look at issues in ways you would never have thought of by yourself.

I've passed on buying some really nice knives because of tip up/down carry problems. Some here will only carry tip up, others only tip down. For me, it really depends upon the design of the knife. I have one that's only tip down and I would not have it any other way. Also, it's not a deep carry clip but, it's perfect for how the rest of the knife is laid out.

Cold Steel makes most of their folders to have a clip mountable on either side . Most repeat CS customers learn to slightly mod these knives to their need . It's pretty simple to bend out the clip to accommodate your type of pockets (thickness of cloth) . Many choose to sand down the G10 under the clip , whichever side they put it on . How should they know how you want your knife set up ? Some guys need maximum retention on thin material and so use the clip and G10 as it comes .

doesnt matter to me. tip up or down....deep or not deep. long as its not too tight or loose. cold steel does a horrible job on their rough g10 knives and the modern voyagers. so tight rips pockets and cant get knife out with out using two hands. whereas spyderco does it right on about every knife.
