Since I’m required to carry every gizmo, gadget, and accoutrement imaginable all day every day at work for every eventuality, when I’m off, I generally try to keep things as uncomplicated as I can.
It’s usually just two folding knives, one for small tasks, and one for larger tasks (arguably, this is already overkill by non-knife people standards, but, you know, yay knives), my car key if I’m going somewhere, wallet, and phone. I may or may not carry a gun, but generally never carry additional mags. I’ve said it before, I think there’s being prepared, and then there’s being hyper vigilant, which I feel can be a burden.
I wear an inexpensive but practical watch that just tells the time. Personally, I don’t have anything going on in my life so pressing that I need to see texts, app notifications, and my EKG activity on my wrist at a glance. Frankly, I find everyone I know who has a smart watch far too distracted by them that it impedes normal human interaction. Having phones in our pocket is already bad enough as the curse of the age.
I’ve personally never had occasion to need a pen in such an emergency circumstance to justify carrying one at all times. I figure I can keep notes on my phone if I have to, and if anyone needs me to sign a check (what’re those?), contract, or autograph (lol), they probably already have a pen for me to use.
I’ve rarely ever needed more light than my phone could provide to justify carrying a separate pocket flashlight, but I don’t generally hang out in the shadows much, either. When I have needed one, it’s usually been roadside car repair related, but I firmly believe everyone should keep a decent flashlight in their car for that purpose, and I always do. Chances are extremely low (I know, I know… but never zero) that I’m going to need 600+ lumens to tactically clear a room when I’m off duty.
My father always carried a handkerchief, which I never understood. I think it’s gross to blow one’s nose in a cloth and carry it around the rest of the day.
In my entire life, I’ve never been so trapped or needed badly enough to get in somewhere that a little titanium prybar was the only or even best option for egress/ingress. Furthermore, if I’m doing something where I need to pull a nail or actually pry something, I probably already have a claw hammer or an actual prybar handy.
I don’t smoke, so I don’t need a lighter on me at all times. In the event I’m caught out of the house during the instantaneous decline of civilization, I’m sure I can obtain one from somewhere.
I don’t carry challenge coins, dice, fidget spinners, pinwheels, pogs, random lengths of chain, water purification tablets, lip balm, toasters… or whatever the other things are I see folks routinely weigh themselves down with in the name of EDC or “preparedness”, but to each their own. I don’t need all that in my humble little life.
Guess I’m just a simple kinda guy. Or is it simpleton? Either or.
