I saved a punk rock girl from having her foot ripped off by an escalator when her shoelace got caught. I should have asked her to buy me dinner :D That was almost 10 years ago.

I've read another story about a woman who was strangled by an escalator when her scarf was caught in it. I believe that by the time someone with a knife was found it was to late. If memory serves, it happened in a New York City subway. I cannot find a link to the article that I read, but here is a blurb, folks in the comments mention the fact that a knife would have saved her life, but in New York apparently few people carry knives.

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-201_162-57398217/elderly-woman-strangled-by-clothes-caught-in-escalator/

Regarding the first story, about fifteen years there was a security guard at a mall here that cut off the pants leg (bell-bottoms) for a kid who got caught in an escalator; he used a box cutter, IIRC. (It was the only thing he could "legally" carry on duty in the mall.) The kids leg was broke, and a lot of the lower leg was lacerated - with a lot of blood loss - from almost being pulled into the little narrow gap between the movable tread & the escalator sidewall. This all happened in something like a minute or two; it took someone that long to get to the emergency shut-off switch at the bottom. The guard just happened to be nearby at the food court eating lunch.

There was a newspaper story a long time ago (late 90's?) about a woman who's silk scarf got caught in an escalator, and it literally almost decapitated her. The people trying to help her were yelling for a knife or anything to cut with, and no one had one. They could hear the bones in her neck cracking, not to mention what the scene must have looked like. Several people were pretty traumatized afterward. The news story was more about cut-off switches not being more accessible, but one person they talked to lamented the fact that (in his words) no one carries a knife anymore.

^^ I had saved that story and had it in a file at home, and when people asked why I carried a knife, I showed them that and tell them that's one of the reasons why. Sometime in the last few years I lost it. I'll see if I can find it again.

Below is my story. It's hard to write it out all over again so I'm going to copy it from another forum.

Yesterday my family and I went on a casual hour long float down the Northfork of the Coeur d Alene river. Sadly the float ended in tragedy.

We were just about to pull our tubes out of the water when we got sucked into the opposite side of the river. We all hit this log that was protruding into the water and got flipped off our tubes. As I came up out of the water I realized that my son (Troy) was not with us. I looked up at the log and and seen his life vest was under the water.

I screamed at the top of my lungs help then rush over to the log, but I was quickly washed down river. My friend Dan that was with us was able to get on the log and was trying to get him out but couldn't get the buckles off the lifevest. After my second try I had one option left so I pulled out the Kershaw Skyline that was in my pocket and jumped infront of the log wrapped my legs around it and cut him out. Dan then pulled him out and we did cpr. He was unconscious but breathing. Long story short we got him mediflight to sacred hart hospital in Spokane. I currently sitting by him in the ICU watching The Pacifier (not my choice).

I'm sorry if this is really long but it feels good to write it out. I'm so glad I had that skyline on me yesterday. A bunch of the other family memeber's said I'm so glad you had a knife. I looked at them and said why wouldn't I have a knife I carry one everyday.

I wish I could post a pic of the skyline but its at the bottom of river now. I have had it for 5 years anyway so I think I got my $30 worth.

I believe these things happen every day, the MSM just doesn't bother unless it's a 'community leader'..."Kern Community College District board trustee Pauline Larwood" ....needing another mention in the press.

FYI - Other publications are showing Vic marketing pictures of some SAK model.
