Pocket knives and food

If eatin' dirt kills you, I would have been dead a long time ago. I'm sixty and still kicking and have cut everything imaginable with a pocket knife including food. A quick wipe on the pants leg and go on. I know parents who try to keep their kids in a bubble to protect them from germs and it seems like they always have the sniffles or infections.

FEED 'EM SOME DIRT!!!

When I was deployed to Afghanistan I used my knife for every meal. The DFAC at the base I was on had cheap, pretty much unuseable platic silverware. Most everyone there had their own silverware and knife. Even the people who ate with the DFAC silverware used their own knife to cut the meat.

Nobody likes military-issue pizza crust huh? :D

I've got a ceramic folder that I use to cut food with, since its not metal it doesn't oxide fruit and vegies, it's also kept a razor sharp edge for a year now with use and no sharpening.

I don't worry about my knife too much. I never cut anything really dirty with it, and if I do I rinse it off when I'm finished so that it will be ready to use anytime. I will pull it out anytime I need to cut food with it.

Plus there is that old saying that a pocket knife is instantly sterilized when you put it in your pocket.

I pull my knife out frequently when the restaurant knife doesn't work, or if we are home and I forgot to put knives on the table, or whatever, and my wife is always complaining of course. I tell her "I haven't cut any animals with the knife today". One time a friend of mine was out hunting and brought a couple of big bullfrogs home. He didn't have his knife handy so I pulled out my mini-grip and he cleaned the frogs with it. I couldn't say that about my knife for awhile, but actually I did clean it real well too.

Sometimes I wash it off with hot water (if it is available)
but most of the time I just wipe it off on my pants, I let my immune system deal with the germs.
Yup. People get sick because they DO worry about germs all the time.

I usually wipe my blade off on my pants leg but I don't peel apples of cut food with it either. I really gross out when people use spit on their sharpening stone, just personal I guess.
I guess you won't spit lube the old lady then eh? :P I had no idea that people would spit on their stones...that is kind of weird. I don't see how you'd get enough fluid on the stone to build up enough slurry.

You can eat bullfrogs?? I had no idea. I suppose the french eat frog legs all the time. Who knew. What does bull-frog taste like, and how would you go about cleaning them?
