Pocket lighters - what's good?

I have one of the Zippo factory o-ringed extra fuel capsules. They are much more resistant to leaking/evaporation than the lighters---even with a rubber band around them. They also hold a spare flint.

These work pretty well.

I've never understood why Zippo hasn't made a lighter with O-rings, as this is about the only common complaint.

Something like an old Kashie bullet lighter or a peanut lighter on steroids would be perfect!

I hope the engineers and marketing dept. at Zippo are reading this.

Has anyone suggested one of these ??

No liquid fuel is needed and they last a long time.. You don't have to mod it like in the pic, its your call..

Better yet you can make one yourself...

All you need is a lantern lighter like one of these,

Some jute twine, wax and a piece of metal tubing... After you've made it, all you'll need is lighter flints, which are about 40 cents for a pack of 5.. I think when I got all the stuff toether it cost me about 20 buck, but I'm sure you can get the wax cheaper then what I did by going to the dollar store..

Btw, would be glad to post up a how to if you're interested.. Let me know ??

You should put a small ferro rod in there.

To me, it definitely appears that the guts of the Helios and the Delta are the same, just the packaging is different.

I prefer the Delta as it is rubber-armored all around where the Helios is rubber covered only where the black is, the silver is plastic.

I've had Deltas for several years. Had problems with a couple of them (wouldn't shut off immediately upon release of plunger), contacted maker, and they were immediately replaced.

Have, but don't use the Helios enough to see if it would eventually have the same symptom(s).

Recently got the Z-plus butane insert for a Zippo case. Works well so far, but have not used long/frequently enough to stake anything on.

Color me stupid but what are ranger bands........

I've got a zippo that i keep for special occasions and it's ran out a few times on me. Are they just these bands i've seen of like innertube cut off?

"Ranger Band" is the tacticool nomenclature for "section of bicycle inner-tubing". :D

The good ol' Bics are the best lighters going, IMHO. I keep an O-ring around them to keep the button from being depressed unintentionally, and they work like champs. I carried and used the same Bic every day for over 2 years before I finally lost it, but it was still going strong.

That said, I carry a Zippo nowadays. Even though they work perfectly, there's not much "pride of ownership" in carrying a Bic. I checked out one of the new Zippo "Blue" lighters over the weekend, and it was awful. Nowhere near the quality of the regular old Zippos that have been around for so long. I feel the same way about the Zippo Blue that I do about the new LED Maglites. Use the same case you've always used, just figure out a way to work the new features into your existing form factor. It's not rocket science. The Zippo Blue feels like a flimsy piece of junk.

I've yet to check it out but friend of mine told me the flints from the bic lighters are high quality and will last longer in the Zippos even after a full life in the bic than the new Zippo or Ronson flints.

i got a pocket torch lighter it is awesome i forget who makes it but the thing holds a ton of fuel

Bics are great but mostly i use the Tokai disposable lighters.
They are basically like Bics but have a colored transparent bodies so you can always see how much fuel is left.
And of course i carry a Peanut lighter on my key-chain and one in my backpack.
I need to get some flat-bottomed peanuts though, unfortunately countycomm doesn't ship outside the U.S.

BIC butanes work OK here in Scandinavia if you keep them in your pocket, but using them out in extreme cold is a problem.

Zippos are nice and traditional but the fuel evap issue puts me off, can somebody please explain what ranger clips are for me?

I LIKE the look of those peanut flat butt lighters, very well made job, could do with a bigger size model too, a walnut:D But, pity they won't sell em outside the US, 11 dollars shipping for one is a bit steep, would pay to buy multiples.

Regards, W

I'm a Bic flicker. I wrap a small rubber band around the lighter and under the thumb striker to keep it from accidentally releasing fuel. I've never had to rely on one to light a fire in cold extreme temps but I always have at least three ways to light a fire in my various kits, even my Altoid tin.

The Bic flints are longer than the Zippo and Ronson.

Thanks for clearing that up...I'll have to run and get an old one for this purpose on my beater zippo. I've got several, i've got an old flat black with red trim. I've had for probably 15 years. I've got a flat black one with a gadsden flag and a few other randoms i've picked up over the years.

On a side note i found one at the bottom of our local "floating" river. Took it home dried it out, polished off the muk put new flint and fluid and i've had a nice personalized lighter with the nam "Bob" on it for quite awhile as well.

These are mighty pocketable, and have an o-ring seal to prevent leaks/evaporation. I've had the mini version on my keychian for months and it still lights everytime, and is still on it's first fueling (though I don't use it much).

I just got mine a couple days ago. I'll second that. They are awesome.

And btw...built tough. With the cap on I have trouble imagining any reasonable circumstance that would destroy one of these. With it off, well you could break it on purpose...with a hammer.

Only thing that worries me is the possibility of melting the o-ring. I have no idea if this is a real problem or not.
