Pocket practices

I have piles of great knives - slip joints, contemporary folders and custom pocket carry fixed blades. My daily carry knife is the blade on a pocket tool that fits inside my front pocket wallet. It's also a mini pry bar and bottle opener. I like to travel light.

Large folder clipped in dedicated right front. Small fixed blade in coin pocket, small auto clipped at 2 o'clock in boot barrel. Dump lint from pocket every few days. Blow knives out with air compressor now and again.

Here's what I wonder. When you set a nice folder down on a flat surface, do you lay it on the show scale or the clip?

This slip fits a variety of knives and gets almost daily use. Goes in front right pocket most of the time, occasionally in the back right pocket.

Clipped in a front pocket. Usually carried alone, especially if it's an open backed design. That's only to keep the edge from getting any damage from keys or whatever poking in and hitting the edge. Handle wear/marks I really don't care about much. Lint gets cleaned out of the knife at irregular occasions when it seems like a good idea at the time.

folder clipped to right front pocket.
car keys rest in the bottom of that pocket. they are all push button now, so I don't need to take them out for any reason during the day and the knife stays out of the way.
pocket lint is of no concern

3" - 3.5" modern folder clipped right front pocket.
Same pocket as my slim wallet and earbuds.

Left pocket is a small flashlight and a leather slip for a pen and small bit driver.

Coin pocket has my carfob. Phone is in back pocket if I'm walking around.

Everything fits nicely and doesn't screw up the lines of the jeans.

Tip up, clipped to front pocket. Been carrying a small Microtech Hera in my coin pocket and seems to be nice.

It's shorts season at work, so I generally ditch the belt and rely on pocket carry only.
My RFP rides whatever "fast" knife I want to keep on hand for dedicated cutting chores. This is either a hard use folder like my mini Adamas if I plan on needing to cut a bunch of stuff on the job, or an OTF like my Hera Mini if I am going to be cutting stuff at the office like the shrink wrap delivered skids are wrapped in. My LFT rides my Charge TTi using the pocket clip. I like having all the bells and whistles and bits that ride along with the sheath, but most days, the tool by itself is enough.

My phone generally rides in my back pocket, and the keyfob of my truck rides along with whatever knife/tool is lighter (usually the pocket knife as the Charge is a chunker).

On the spine!

Man, my memory is really slipping. I completely forgot about fixed-blade pocket carry.

For several years I would carry a few different fixed-blades in back pocket sheaths. I made the sheaths myself using thick, stiff leather (example below). As you can see, the sheaths were made to exactly fit the shape of my back jeans pocket, this kept the knife right where I wanted it (on the far outer edge of the pocket).

The largest knives I've carried like this had 5" long blades (like the Al Mar SERE Operator pictured).

And I can honestly say that this is the first time I have posted a picture of my ass on the internet 😁 .

Knife gets its own pocket. It can be any pocket, but I do have many pairs with pockets that seem like they were designed for this specific purpose.

I have a murse …..a satchel….Indiana Jones used a satchel. Carries all my stuff now. Put a knife with a clip in my front left pocket or a pocket slip. Still have to try horizontal carry of a small fixed blade.

If it has a pocket clip, it gets clipped. If no pocket clip, it rattles around in the bottom of my pocket with the other stuff. If I'm wearing my Riggs jeans, then none of the pocket clips fit over the little leather patch at the corner of the pocket which is there to provide extra reinforcement against the extra wear of pocket clips.....

Knife clipped in RF pocket. The pants I typically wear (Vertx Delta or Tru-Spec 24/7) also have dedicated knife pockets. I've found that the inexpensive Case leather slip fits snuggly in there, and that's where I keep my SAK for the day (or if the day calls for it I forgo the slip and that's where I carry my Swisstool). I carry that on the right side as well, for quick reach.

LF pocket varies depending on needs/wants for the day, but the knives I carry in there go in a leather pocket organizer. It's just a cheapo that I originally bought for proof of concept, and I'll likely buy a better one or try my hand at making my own at some point, but it has worked well so I've just stuck with it.. In there can be anything from a SE Dragonfly, to a traditional, small flashlight, 58mm Vic, or sometimes just my keyfob. In the left "knife pocket" goes my Surefire Aviator.

The lint stays in there, as I have a name to live up to ;)

My EDC is a Leatherman Wave. It lives in a horrizontaally oriented belt pouch behind my right hip.

his carries the weight comfortably and is visually unobtrusive. . . .even when wearing a suit.

From a recent post in Traditionals. Whats a Buckaroo Pouch and how do they work.

Ya bet Mongo . Here's my wife sewing some up yesterday:

There's a slit in the end of the strap. This allows you to back feed it or back braid it onto your belt loop:

Ya can drop the knife in the pouch and put it in your pocket. I tend to carry mine, when I carry a folder, in my left front pocket but took these pics on the other side as most folks seem to prefer the right side.

Ya can stick it in either the front pocket or the rear as shown here:

So basically a Buckaroo Pouch acts as a slip with a tether. It protects the folding knife from keys and debris and also makes access easier. Ya need your knife, just tug up on the tether and the pouch will come out of your pocket. Use your knife and just let the pouch dangle. No misplacing the slip while you use your knife. All done, back in the pouch and back in your pocket. They are extremely popular in the cowboy world. When this is your corner office with a view:

But digging your knife out of a pocket when wearing those leggings can be tricky, particularly if you need it quickly, The Buckaroo Pouch makes that easier. My friend Dave is pulling his knife out at this branding to cut a calf. We didn't make that particular Buckaroo Pouch, I did make his leggings though:

Did make this one though, seen at the same branding, well heck the belt too, come to think of it:

These are extremely popular cause they just work.
