I had Charlie Ridge make this for me. I had him make it but leave the handle for me to shape myself.

Not totally done with the handle yet but got it good enough to go out and test the cutting. Great:thumbup:

The idea was a knife around the size of my Charlie May Swamp Oak, but with a handle more like the Skookum Bush Tool and then with the curved edge that delivers a lot of cutting power like the Brian G Andrews Bushcraft.

1/8" 01 3.25" blade 4" Handle. Still need to shape the handle a bit more buff off the bolts but the final shape is on there and feels really great to cut with it. The more I sand the Arctic Birch the wavier and prettier it looks:thumbup:

that looks fantastic! from what i've seen, i really like your taste in knives. is is a "true scandi" or does it have a convex microbevel?

Pretty much full metal scandi at this point.

Normally even though I attempt to keep it totally straight I strop my blades back to full sharpness so eventually it will probably end up with a convex microbevel since it is 01. The D2 and 3V ones usually don't do that even when you strop them but I think the 01 is my favorite steel of those I've tried.

the micro bevel from the strop is, to me, pretty negligable. but on say some of muskrat mans knives hes grinds them out with a convex micro bevel. which works fine for alot of people, but that makes it a little more difficult to cut in the typical scandi way, for me at least. anyway, yours looks like a winner to me.

Damn HD!!!! That is an awesome knife!!!!! Nice Scales! That Birch is gorgeous!!

Mark is a bad ass maker. Man he can make anything!! Did he do up some leather? Or did ya opt out untill you did the handles?

Very, very nice, HD. You had some excellent ideas with this one. I bet that handle is most comfortable with the SBT profile.

BarberFobic,

I had MM make me one w/o the secondary and hat to put it on because the blade chipped out so bad, 3 times. I think the one I have either has a bit too low an angle for the thickness of blade or is tempered slightly brittle because before I microbeveled it you could feel it lose it's cutting power as the edge chipped off:thumbdn:

This blade on the other hand does not appear to have that problem. I haven't used it on any oak yet but I tried some hard dried maple w/o chipping.

JWilliams,

He made it exactly like the pattern I sent. It was really nice to have someone who could make exactly what I wanted rather than take anything out or change anything.

I want a sheath to go in my pocket with maybe a clip on the front.

I really like it. It looks very comfy, and has a really classy look to it.

As far as leather, I EDC a game warden in a pocket leather sheath from Chuddybear leather.

Its awesome. He put a flare on the top of the mouth of the sheath to push on with your thumb when drawing the blade, and it has a clip on the front which really holds the knife in place and makes it super easy to draw. Its the best pocket leather ive used so far.

Yeah I've looked at that Chuddybear site before.

One of my favorite sheath makers that you don't really think of as a "sheath maker" is Scott Gossman. He's made me several sheaths. What I liked about Chuddy Bears stuff was it was a lot like Scotts. Thick leather box like and not overly wide, really compact.

Really nice day out today. Think I'm going to take it for a walk in the woods.

I posted a few other pics of it HERE

But yeah really impressed with Charlie Ridge. Not my last thing I want to have him make!

That's a nice little blade. It would be better if it was a wharncliffe. Then again, it's not my knife :o That birch is cool looking stuff.

Holy moley! That's one cool knife! I love everything about it. The curve of the blade, the shape of the handle the size, the wood! Wow!

HD, great looking handle...I suspect the birch changes it's look at different angles...amazing piece of wood. I like the long belly design too. Now you're into the fine details part of the project, making it fit perfectly to your needs...enjoy!
