Pocket sharpeners.

I carry some credit-card-sized bits of wet and dry paper in my wallet for emergency touch ups. 180. 320 & 600 grits.

anyone got any good advice on which one to buy and where?

The where is easy: www.newgraham.com

The what is complicated: A Spyderco "Pro-File" set if you carry mostly serrated and recurved blades; a Spyderco "Double-Stuff" if you carry mostly simple carbon or certain stainless steels (13C26, 12C27, AUS-6, AUS-8...) and send an email if it's not on their page anymore as I'm sure they can get it for you; or either a DMT XCoarse/Coarse Duo-Fold or one of those and a Fine/XFine one as well if you like the stainless supersteels and/or punish your edges on a daily basis.

I have several pocket diamond hones that I carry on special occasions, but I must admit that I don't always carry them. I do keep hones in about 6 different places in my house, a collection in my office, in the car and tucked in my luggage. I am good at finding improvised hones and sometimes stop and buy a Wet or Dry combination pack while on a trip.

Leatherman Wave diamond file, plus it has two more cutting edges in the clip and serrated sheepsfoot.

How long do the diamond rods usually last? Also, the "credit card"-sized sharpeners? The ceramics are said to last a very long time (the finer they are, the longer they wear). Of all of them, I like the diamond rods and the ceramic criss-cross the best. The diamond stones also are nice, I just lack experience using them.

If the diamond rods were made with a high-quality bonding, they can last years. When they're new, they have a lot of excess/extra unbonded diamond dust on them which makes them cut faster and leave a coarser-than-advertized finish, but that goes away quite quickly and you end up with a slower cutting, smoother finishing hone that's still faster-cutting than most other hones at the same grit level. That's been my experience with DMT, EZ-Lap, and Spyderco.

works pretty well, had this one about 3 years and it sharpens damaged edges nicely. I can get a coarse but shaving edge.
