pocket, sheath or slip?

Normally I just drop them in my pocket but I have been carrying my Canal Street Ring opener in an AG Rusell slip pouch.

I do not carry anything in my pockets except a bandana!

So I carry a 3 1/2" or smaller in a leather pouch on my belt
If it is 4" then the next size up of the leather pouch, or a soft nylon pouch.

I usually slip in strong side pocket & usually nothing else is in there. I do have a small FB attached to my keychain, which dangles outside my weak side pocket, though. Another thing I've done, with larger/longer slippies, is slip it next to my wallet (Vertically) in my back pocket, but it has to be one that's long enough for me to get at it, such as a Case Seahorse Whittler or something along those lines (4" or more seems to work best).

I did try using a makeshift sheath out of cotton cloth, but it just seemed such a hassle to pull it out, then pull the knife out of that, & then put the sheath back in the pocket until I needed to put the knife away.

I suppose a belt sheath would be best, but I have enough things on my waist, lol (Gun, mags, phone, possibly another knife-IWB FB, etc).

I do have to say, though, that some of those pouches/sheaths are very nice.

Watch pocket for me if I'm wearing jeans (which is most of the time), or I'll just drop it in a front pocket. I've never really used slip sheaths, though I've been wanting to try a buckaroo pouch sometime.

For larger slip-joints, I have a few belt sheaths that work well, but they don't get used much. I usually EDC some type of fixed-blade on my belt, so carrying a folder in a belt sheath seems redundant.

I always carry one loose in my right front pocket - I don't recall ever using a slip/sheath... traveling light

I often use a belt pouch like the AG Russell or the Bullards to anchor items like holsters or reloading pouches to keep them from moving. On some pants the belt loops fall right but on most they don't. I can use the Bullard at the belt loop and the holster between that and the next loop and everything stays put. The smaller cases just help to keep the smaller knives easier to access rather than having to dig to the bottom of my pocket. Some large knives do work in the back pocket but I try to avoid that.

I wear dress pants on weekdays and I use a slip pouch then. Weekends I just pocket whatever I'm carrying.

Well, My main knife, my peanut is in a custom kydex sheath I made it around my neck, like any neck knife, easy to get at almost anywhere, snaps in and out... Any bigger slippy I add to pair with it, gets dropped in my back pocket. Belt sheaths get caught on things and are a pain(literaly) if I have to lay down for anything, so I don't bother trying to use them with large folders anymore.

I have one little leather slip, that I keep my amherst canoe in, simply because Mike at colectorknives.net sent me the slip case as a freebie, and the canoe is the only knife that fits it..

I had a buckaroo pouch for a while, and a custom one that carries a knife and pen together, I love them since it keeps the knife vertical in the upper pocket, easier to get at and more comfortable in thinner slacks.. but I was carrying too many different sizes of knives, so I got tired of having it/not having it depending on the knife...

So anymore, other than the neck 'nut, i just drop them in a pocket. (Since you mentioned the theory--I usually get a week+ on one pair of work jeans, dirty construction work, but no problems yet with excessive accumulation in pockets/knives)

I have an old, cheap, very thin wallet that I have stitched up on three sides so it forms a little pocket. I keep this in my left front pants pocket, and keep whatever knife I'm carrying in that, along with a guitar pick.

For years I just dropped the knife into my pocket. Then I realized that every single pair of bluejeans I've worn for the last 40 years or so has a little knife-shaped wear spot on the outside that pocket. No big deal, but I like my knife being in one place, in one position, too.

I just put it in my left pocket with whatever else is in there

I keep my right front pocket reserved for a knife. On some occasions I carry one in pearl it might be in a purse:eek:, but not very often. Bone, ivory or stag actually looks better to me with time if I just carry the knife.

Speaking of knife purses here is an old one that came with a Keen Cutter Dr knife in my collection.

I hate to admit it but I use a leather slip pouch most of the time. It keeps the knife upright in my pocket for a more comfortable carry. The extra time to access or put the knife away isn't an issue for me.

Just drop it in my pocket - I always carry my knife in my right front pocket, which usually has car or apartment keys in it also, though I keep my change in my left front pocket. I've never taken to back pocket carry -- seen way too many antique knives with bent scales and liners that had to have happened by being sat on - a lot. My normal carry knife is between 3" and 3 1/2" long - occasionally a little longer for a slim two blade pen or a slim single blade jack, but not much longer. I will occasionally carry a 3" knife in my watch pocket, but not all that often.

lately its been either a case peanut or swayback jack, both fit easy in my jeans watchpocket.

Absintheur, be real careful if you clip one of those pouches to your belt. I've lost a cell phone due to a very similar pouch.

I prefer to carry in my left front pocket. If I have to put my cell phone there instead, the knife goes into the left cargo pocket or a tool pocket in the carpenter jeans, pants allowing. If I'm wearing pants without either, it goes next to my wallet in my right front pocket or in my right back pocket by itself. Often, I can't sit comfortably on something in my back pocket, though. I haven't really thought about the scales or liners getting bent by sitting on the knife.

Most of my pants don't have watch pockets, but with the ones that do, whatever's in them will jump out when I take out my wallet.

When I carry my Schrade LB-7 (similar to Buck 110), a belt sheath, while obnoxious, is the only way to carry.

I like Jackknife's idea of securing a knife with a bandanna. I have had things fall out of the tool pouch on the carpenter jeans, and that really should help keep things in place.

I also like the finish that carrying my SAK with keys, coins and junk provides. The smooth slippery plastic scales on a SAK are sometimes criticized as ...toylike. A bit of pocket wear on the scales drops the bright plastic gloss to more of a matte finish, something more honest, something closer to what you might find on a tool. It also makes the scales significantly grippier.

If I ever get a nice or expensive knife, I might be tempted to try a slip if there's room in my pockets.

I use a variety of pouches, both belt and pocket clip. Here are some I use most often, as you can see they will work with a wide variety of different size knives.

WOW. I'm envious of your great selection.

I've tried making some slips out of Suede - alot more difficult than I first realized. I like a larger lockback (GEC) so I use a Belt sheath. I think a slip is also a good idea to keep the knife dirt and scratch free.

Depends on the size. Smaller knives will go in the watch pocket of jeans or the front pocket of shorts. Bigger ones are kept upright by my wallet in the back.
