Recommendation? Pocket Slip

Ive done a couple. the fixed blades I filled the pocket so the knife wouldnt turn. I wouldnt blindly insert the knife though while in your back pocket. lol

Very nice. I use to make a back pocket sheath and thats exactly why I quit.

Has anyone noticed tarnish on the bolsters from carrying knives in a pocket slip? Is this something all slips will do to a knife?

B Behr95 Yep it depends on the leather. Everyone says to stay away from chrome tan leather (most soft flexible leathers) and to use vegetable tan leather. This is internet armchair expertise as I have had both tarnish and both not and have for decades. In fact I'm running a test right now on a leather that I have lots of leftovers from making several pair of shotgun chaps from. I made a quick rough slip and stuffed a folder with a polished nickel silver bolster into it three days ago. So far so good. I've seen other chap leathers tarnish overnight.

This knife has lived in the chrome tanned buckaroo pouch for many years, no tarnish:

This leather, another chap chrome tanned leather, caused this knife to tarnish overnight:

Veg tan leather is not immune:

So anyhoo depends on the leather. Until making that buckaroo pouch that had caused the tarnish I had gone years without using any leather that was causing tarnish. Quien Sabe. I've just gone to testing before I build these days.

I appreciate the info very much, thank you. I put the Buck 301 BF knife in a Knivesshipfree slip (soft leather) and the polished bolsters have started to tarnish. Same thing happened with a few GEC's. All in Knivesshipfree slips. A little Flitz removed the tarnish but I think I'll keep them out of those slips. Thanks again for the info!

Or a guy could just carry them in the slips and keep em out when not carrying, might work if the tarnishing isn't too bad.

Sometimes tarnish may also be a result the particular bolster material used.....I believe that nickel silver is more prone to tarnish, than say a stainless steel bolster. So perhaps a combination of both leather and material in some cases? But Dave's advice is probably the best :)

I can see tarnish being an issue if it just stays in the slip but if it gets carried and used, so is removed from the slip at times, I think this will naturally inhibit any tarnishing. I would think brass bolsters would be most susceptible to tarnish just by my experience with brass and tarnish in general.

I made my own since they are really easy to do, you make them as you need them, you can customize them as needed and I'm really cheap. I read somewhere (can't remember off hand) to make the slip rough side out to keep the darn thing from slipping out of your pocket.
