Ok guys, I like to tinker on the computer designing folders. Well for fun I drew this up thinking it would be a small survival, pocketskinner, last ditch knife. Well after looking at it for awhile I decided it looks like a cheap, chinese fantasy knife.
I am having some folder parts cut at my waterjet cutter soon, is this worth cutting out or no.
I want your honest opinion, Dont be afraid to hurt my feelings. I am not emotionally attached to this piece at all.
The holes are 1" in diameter and the skinner is 4.5 inches long and 2.5 inches front to back.
Thanks

I would love to give it a try! A couple from the waterjet shouldn't be a big investment, and an in hand model- if not right- may lead you to a great new design. My main concern would be the bottom tip, in my experience fingers roll over sharp points like that. Flattening it out a bit should help prevent it. It has very positive retention, a good 3 finger grip, space between the fingers and apex of the edge. A sharp top point with area for thumb reinforcement, lots of belly to maximize edge length. Make it out of a thin, strong steel and it could be a very nice knife.

Nothing helps like holding a prototype.

I like it. I'd try it out, and only input I can give is to add some jimping ontop for thumb control.

I would round over that rear tip/point, as mentioned it would probably result in nicks.

Otherwise, love the idea :)

Honestly, I think that could be pretty handy. I would round over the points on both ends of the edge, and that way it could easily be carried in some kind of flat wallet without worrying if you were going to stab yourself when carrying.

I hunted with a guy that carried a knife that was similar, and he could skin out a deer very quickly with it as he had it sharpened to a razor edge. IIRC, it was a variant of one of the old Alaskan Hunters knives. With no points on it, he never worried about nicking anything (including himself!) he wasn't supposed to. It was great because since it had a finger hole and notches it didn't slip in his hands, even when covered with blood and tallow. Even better, you could get it spotlessly clean in just a minute of cleaning. It was sharp and manuverable enough to clean a fish, to sharp to make plenty of tinder for fires. I think (but don't know) his was made of 440C.

I personally always thought that would have been an excellent backup knife in my hiking gear, one that I could put in my small box of goodies I carry in my pack with my fire stuff, etc. His wouldn't have worked because it had small scales on it and that made it a bit bulky; your design has solved that problem.

I like it!

Robert

I like it! A little jimping on the left hand side of the spine for the thumb and that little sucker ain't going nowhere!

I like everything except the rear point---yes, even with the scallop out of it, it's going to be so far back that I can't see it being used, and it's just something to potentially catch/perforate a hide that you're working on. Completely round on that rear portion (or just a square) and you've got a winner, in my opinion. :)

Did you see this one in the Custom & Handmade section?

Mini Norse Tactic Tool by Fairall Designs

Well thanks for all the feedback everyone, This is where its at now. I am undecided on the point on the top of the knife.
Midnight, I do believe a wallet carry is in order also, Great idea.
Do you guys see any other improvements I should implement.
abcdef, I looked at the mini Norse Tactical tool by Fairall designs. And I must admit it looks earily similar, but I can assure you I had not seen it before today.
The inspiration for my design came from a European 2 tables down from mine at the Blade show, His name is Robert Kaufmann and he had a nice design where the
blade extended under the first two fingers. I had been thinking about that design for awhile and then other pieces I kept seeing (Boker Gorm, CRKT Keydashi, CRKT shakaulu)
Kept bringing it to mind. So this design came of those hauntings.

That's what I'm talking about. I wasn't really worried about the rear point, but it looks like it would be alot safer now that it's rounded off. I'm glad you decided on some jimping. I was never a fan of jimping until here recently when I realized it really helps you keep control. Lookin' good, man.

I really like this as well. I think it would be extremely useful for skinning, or even as survival-type knife. If you made a well designed kydex sheath for it, I would absolutely carry it when I'm hiking, kayaking, in the woods, around the house...

Hey Chris,

Looks like a comtemporary take on Inuit ULU with and extended handle. In the right hands a very usefull tool, everything from skinning to chopping vegies for the salad. Run with it.

I like everything but the jimping, but that is personal- I find a good handle design negates the need and most are way too aggressive for my hands.

BH - looking good but maybe center up the large diameter hole so the tear out is equal on both sides. Looks like you could carry the idea into a couple sizes too.

Thanks everybody for the positive feedback, I would have definitely not had it cutout if not for you guys. Also appreciate the feedback so it wont suck.
H20knife
Dont worry buddy you will be seeing this one coming at you in a few days to cutout. I just need to decide on thickness, I believe 1/8 is most probably in order which means I need to order more steel and get it sent to you.
Chris

PS Considering this as its sidekick, What say you guys.

The "sidekick" looks like it might feel strange in the hand because of how close your index finger will be to your thumb...
