Pocketskinner, Crap or worth making.

The "sidekick" looks like it might feel strange in the hand because of how close your index finger will be to your thumb...

I agree. Nothing to grasp. I made a little necker where the choil was too large/close to the spine and it's not very comfortable at all.

Your both right, I cut it out today in cardboard. Did not work out at all, total flop.
AAh well 1 out of 2 aint bad.
Chris

Chris,

I think you're going to have a issue with bending between the index finger hole & blade. Maybe you did a FEA and it's OK??

Mark

Thanks everybody for the positive feedback, I would have definitely not had it cutout if not for you guys. Also appreciate the feedback so it wont suck.

Dont worry buddy you will be seeing this one coming at you in a few days to cutout. I just need to decide on thickness, I believe 1/8 is most probably in order which means I need to order more steel and get it sent to you.
Chris

PS Considering this as its sidekick, What say you guys.

Chris,
You might want to run that blade all the way back to the ring, with the edge radius comming off the ring about half way up the grindline. Be less prone to flex.
Another option would be to use the same radius from the circle into the blade as your using on the handle into the circle, thereby reversing the sweep into the cutting edge as you have it now.
Just something to consider.
Jerry Fisher

Here's a quick sketch I made of a few changes to your present design. Just and idea you might kick around. You can clean the radius's around the ring up in your computer program, this is just a freehand sketch so its kind of rough.

No never quite got to the FEA (Finite Element Analysis) stage yet. I do think the cutout is probably too high for a good field use knife though.
I think Jerry's approach is a much more sensible approach. But still not real sure how comftorable it would be. I cad'd Jerry's latest rendition to let it run around in my head
for a few days to mull it over. Upside to this handle design is all the real estate in the center one could do sexy things like Universal wrench and or bottle opener.

The skinner is very Ulu-esque, I do like it very much. The sidekick looks like a caper knife. Probably a great pair for hunting knives. :)

Chris,

Looking good to me.
Check your email I have a question regarding your other details.

Thanks,

Mark

That last rendition is nice, like the drop at the circle on the spine. Here is an update on the one I did with universal wrench, bottle opener and screwdriver. Just something to play with. Im sure you can clean it up much better in your computer program.

Well thanks for all the feedback everyone, This is where its at now. I am undecided on the point on the top of the knife.
pocketskinner2.JPG
You might consider making the point a little longer and less swept back and putting a thumb choil on the back of the tip so that you can use the tip of the for finer work or put your thumb on the back of the blade to bear down on it, as necessary.

I like how you've shortened the under side of the blade so that it doesn't sweep back as far. In my opinion, any part of the blade behind the middle finger would be hard to use, anyway.

Where the Sidekick's blade connects to the handle looks like a weak spot to me, especially if it is hard used/abused.

OOPS! By the time I posted this you had already changed it.

Your Pocketskinner blanks are in the works, they have a nice feel in the hand and should be a hit with the hunters.
I'll send some pics tomorrow.

Wow you're making a few! Love that straight edged fixed blade in the lower center too, would love to see more of it as you get them done :)

The one in the lower center is a harpoon tip knife. I will have photos in another thread later today.

Oh wow, just saw the thread, it's a beast! Had me fooled good wit hthat pic of just the tip. Great looking knife and those skinners look better in the metal than the drawings too

for some odd reason I though it would be a bit bigger. either way its nice. how much for 1? what type of steel? would you sell some without grinding it down/sharpening (blanks)?
