Poison Ivy

I am also allergic to PI and have found that there is a laundry soap by the name of Fells Naptha that works wonders at removing any of the PI oils from my skin when I come in contact with it. After I come in from yard work, I wash any exposed skin with the soap and it seems to work very well. Even if I do get an outbreak the soap seems to prevent spreading. Since this is a laundry soap I'm sure it works just as well on clothing.

Great Dave... I'll check that out.

I had always heard jewelweed would clear up the rash but have never tried it. And I get poison oak something TERRIBLE. Over the counter stuff barely does anything.

If applied quickly after contact with a poison plant, lawsone beats the urushiol to those sites, in effect locking it out. The simple result is that you don't get the rash.

This would have to be done within 10 minutes to be effective because that is all the time it takes for the urushiol to bind with the skin. I also have had experience with jewelweed many years ago and personally did not find it effective.

I have one little pharmacy in my town that sells this Fells Naptha. As soon as I laid it on the counter the pharmacist knew what I wanted it for. She said that the old timers in the area have been using it for years. I think it's one of last lye based soaps like our Great Grandparents made at home.

I have never broken out in a rash from PI.... I work in it everyday... sometimes trimming it back with weedwackers and getting it all over myself. Perhaps I am not affected by it.

When I tested the jewelweed years ago... some collegues and I rubbed PI into our forearms and waited until we felt it tingling. Then applied the jewelweed.... None of us developed rashes. That sold me on it.

I also use old fashioned pinetar soap (which contains turpentine) when washing up.. I suppose that has much to do with breaking up the oils, as well.

Fells Naptha is awesome stuff. My mom swears by it.

I don't know what I would be able to do in a survival situation about breaking down the oil. If I can't do something to get it gone, like Derrick I would be in the hospital. Aside from rubbing with jewelweed, do you guys have any suggestions?

David

Look up old recipies for lye soap. Most, when not suggesting buying cake lye from a store, tell how to distill it from hardwood ash. I mention this because rubbing a spot of poison ivy with ash from a hardwood fire gives me some relief from poison ivy when camping. You can also buy old fashioned lye soap from several online stores.

I can also attest to jewelweeds ability to help not only with poison ivy but many dermatological conditions.

A couple of things about poison ivy if you get in contact with it, (1) you have to rinse it off completely within 10-15 minutes. If you don't rinse it off completely by not using enough water, you could make things worse as you have made poison ivy soup! I have heard of people getting poison ivy by standing under it in the rain. And, (2) it is your immune system overreacting to the urushiol that causes the bad rash. You can immunize yourself.

I am going to tell you what I and others I know do - not recommending this to you as you could be one of the those hyper-sensitive people that has a bad reaction. I haven't heard of anybody having a problem, but I only know a few that do this...

In the spring when poison ivy first leafs out, I eat a leaf. Once a week for nine weeks I eat a young tender poison ivy leaf. Saliva neutralizes the urushiol, so no problems there. If I do this AND don't get a rash by rubbing up against poison ivy in that nine week period, I won't get poison ivy for that year. Somepeople that do this will only get a very small rash if they run into poison ivy whereas before they would have a very bad reaction.

No way in hell...:thumbdn:

Jewelweed grows in the same conditions as PI (but not PO), so 10 mins. is not out of the question.

Most "hand sanitizer" is jellied alcohol, and the AMA and SGUS strongly suggest alcohol, water rinse, then soap and water.

I like the hand wipes with alcohol for this too.

I seem to be very lucky or immune to it. I have ran threw a patch of that stuff and maybe just only get small line of it. As a precaution I rinse off with alcohol, cool water, soap and then water again. As for my clothes I just wash them by themselves in hot water/ soap and run the washer again with lots of bleach.
(not with clothes in it of course)

I have talk to buddy at work and he does lawn services on the side. He uses gasoline to rinse his arms off as soon as he has had contact or within 15-30min. My luck I will try this and I will burst in to flames.

Hey Guys....

Nice Rick!!!
We've got Jewelweed everywhere around here.. will have to harvest some and have my neighbor try it out..

I to am uneffected by PI..

Not that I intentionally go and handle it, although I have in the past without problems,, but have seen friends who only have to look at it and it's all over them...

I once trimmed up some ash leaves with a swiss army knife scissors to look like PI leaves, showed a friend the leaves and rubbed it all over his arm.. LOL :) He wasn't impressed and was VERY relieved when I told him it wasn't PI...

Another friend and I were trimming up some branches on his tree fort (hunting blind) and told him the tree was covered in PI..He didn't believe me,, and was covered in a rash the next day...

My neighbor uses and swars by Visine which he rubs onto his rashes, and says it works...

Anyway Great info to know....
