"Poking and digging" knife.

SAK with a spoon or a spork?

Closest I guess.

Reason for thinking of folder is for when you don't INTEND to dig but may.
Like out in the woods and you come across an old buried bottle or neat rock or whatever.

Fold out the junk blade and go for it.

I guess any SAK with blade one end and screwdriver other would do just fine. :)

Having been in the army I'd say the Bayonet. That's probably what they were used for the most. Those spade type japanese digging instruments look even better and now I don't have to carry everything I have on my back more specialized tools seem nice when available.

Brilliant. Now I know how to get around any illegality about carrying a 6" fixed to protect my Jack Russell against more pitbull attacks. "It's for gutting rabbits, constable".
I'll be looking for a tempered trowel to sharpen & sheath, & not frighten the populace. "It's for digging my dog out of rabbit holes, constable". Yeah. Right.

The Svord Peasant is a nice garden-use folder. Used mine for a lot of sidewalk edging in the garden. All the dirt, rocks and roots didn't hurt the L6 steel much and it sharpened back up to a shaving edge without a problem. If ya need two blades, buy two and you won't break the bank!

DO NOT BUY A HORI HORI... Biggest P.O.S.

Get a treasure wise instead.

We use them for digging up UXO's by hand.

Hori Hori's handle separated .
TW digger.. No issues

Condor Bushlore is a great digging knife and not very expensive. Keep a sharp folder in your pocket for detailed cutting.

That's a rebranded Zenbori Soil Knife like the one I posted earlier. Great tool, and fits well in a pack.

For a folder, try the U Dig It.

Get a Soil Knife. My wife will break anything. She's broken many shovels, and I finally had to weld a super-socket shovel to stand up to her extreme landscaping. The soil knife is great, and we just got another one. About $20, made in Italy. Great warranty, sharp. Feel like a Gladiator with this thing. The little rescue hook is great for shearing off roots and rope. Just a great product all around for it's purpose.

With the variations of what is essentially the exact same base product with similar tooling marks and surface finishes I suspect that the Zenbori, Treasure Wise, and A.M. Leonard are all made in the same factory. I bet it's not really made in Italy, though I could be wrong. Italy is pretty lax about labeling country of origin. Doesn't matter much at the end of the day, though, as it's a heck of a tool in whatever variation you so choose to purchase. :)

When playing "archaeologist" with my trusty metal detector, I carry several tools -
- a 12", an 8" and a 6" slotted screwdrivers combo with the thickest shafts available for poking and wedging
- a small garden trowel for small hole digging
- folding shovel (military type) for larger holes and quantity moving of dirt
- a BK3 for prying (used to use an Abalone Iron from a California dive shop - the Ontario SP8 would work too)
- a sieve for sifting small items from dirt clods and scoops of sand
- a bucket to carry the tools and any keepers.

Any cutting is done with the BK3 (roots etc) or one of the multiple EDC knives I carry.
