Hey Guys,

My wife and I just made a trip up to Churchill Mb as an early celebration of our wedding anniversary. Our friend is a flight attendant for a Northern airline so we go some buddy passes for cheap. We went with two of our friends.
I thought some of you would enjoy seeing another part of the world in our home province.
It's Beluga Whale season and that was the purpose of our trip but we did see a few Polar bears hanging around(Churchill is polar bear capital of the world) even though its not the season for them.
We went to kayak with the beluga whales but flight complications messed that up and by the time we got there the weather had turned and only zodiac tours were available. I was disappointed but the experience blew me away. My wife and I had such an amazing time and couldn't believe how friendly and interactive the beluga whales are. They come into the Churchill river from the Hudson Bay by the thousands from July-August(Until the Killer Whales move in for a few days to catch any stragglers).
Here are some Beluga pics from my phone. I have better pics and film I can add later if anyone is interested.

We found some really curious pods and we had Belugas interacting with us for 45 min straight. From huge Males to little babies. It was incredible. They let us touch them and everything, and I had an underwater camera filming that I found out later had picked up all there sounds and songs. They aren't called the canaries of the sea for nothing!
We saw a male polar bear from the boat about 100 yards away but the camera phone isn't too great. Hopefully you can make it out, he was HUGE! We also saw a momma and her cub not too far.

We rented a truck and did some exploring the next day looking for polar bears. No luck but we saw some great scenery and Baby foxes. And lots of birds and wild flowers which are both a big attraction for avid bird watchers and wildlife lovers.
Our chariot for the day:

This is what happens when you have so much more landscape than people...this is Ms Piggy, crashed on its way to the Churchill airport in '79.

This is the "Golf Balls." A research facility used in the 70's for rocket research.

And a little knife content. I'm a huge history buff, particularly Canadian History so I am trying really hard not to go on any rants but let's just say I loved Churchill! This is a folding knife from York Factory which was established in 1684. The knife was not dated but I'm sure some of you have a better idea than I do! It's a little smaller than my GEC #15

Sorry if this is too long...I tried really hard to condense it.
Oh and since it was an anniversary trip...

Stunning. The weather, the historic sites and artifacts, the animals... I'd love to visit!

wow some nice pics. looks like a great place to visit and explore. thanks for sharing

Thanks guys
You should all visit!
Tourists come from around the world for the wildlife and flora of the subarctic.
My wife and I were blown away and I wish we could have stayed longer.
I'll put up a video when I have time to put it together. and...I'll throw in a little more knife content just to keep things going.
These are about as traditional as you can get in Canada

I thought this was cool, you can see how they used the flint. The brass dragons were a Hudson Bay trademark

There are about 50 dogs here chained up in the tundra. Polar bears often come and interact with the dogs so it is a good spot to look for them. But we didn't find any. These are real sled dogs.

Okay, now I'll stop! Hope you guys enjoy, thanks for looking!

If everyone else goes there, I'm no longer interested. Thanks anyway.

:D

Ha, everyone does not go there.
But people travel the world to see the wild life and fauna only found there, those who are interested at least.
The airport is tiny and no security. You would have to fly to Winnipeg first but what I meant is it's worth the trip. To those who are interested in that kinda thing

Sullie,

Thank you very much for this especially interesting and informative thread.
Your images are very much appreciated.

Glad you enjoyed them, I had no idea I would be so impressed with the trip. My wife and I loved it.
Thanks

Fantastic post ! Too bad about your plane though, forget the buddy passes next time. :p I learned to drill holes in our large plastic shipping tubs, then put zip ties through and all around the upper sealing lip. Amazing how things ''disappear'' while being transferred through the northern communities.

Thanks guys.
If it weren't for the buddy passes we wouldn't have been able to make the trip till I'm done school in a few years.
But a 95% discount is hard to turn down!
The people there were great! And so was the airline, we just had to fly standby and the plane filled up on short notice.
UpNorth, do you have any other suggestions on must see destinations of the North?

any idea what kind of bird that is in your dog pic?

No, not specifically that one sorry, possibly a common raven? Wish I could be more help but I did see some fascinating birds. I wish I knew more about them but some locals were able to help me identify most of them.
Thanks again guys, glad you enjoyed them.
