Police 4 K390

The only time my k390 has rusted is after living in my pocket all day working in a very hot and humid building with me sweating so much all day my pants were drenched. I realized at the end of the day there was some spotting, just a little surface rust spots that came right off. I've carried it 6 months before with no rust at all. I then pulled out my leatherman from the same pocket and it too had rust on it in a few spots. If it took enough sweat and heat to rust 420 stainless to get my k390, I'm ok with that. K390 is very low maintenance to me. I spray a little silicone lubrication for rust protection in the pivot once a week or two and otherwise just treat it like a knife.
Never worried about the blade itself, just the liners.

Yall are making me want a police 4 now too
I was hesitant at first because it is a pretty big knife but once you carry it you realize it is excellence. The other day I was in a finance meeting with 3 other people and someone saw my knife clip and asked what I was carrying. I said a Spyderco, and then there was an awkward silence as if everyone was waiting for me to take it out. So I did. Thought to myself here we go and opened this big boy blade right up and people were a little shocked. They said whoa, just in case? So self defense tool is first thing that came to their minds but I said it's actually quite useful when you have to cut food related items. In fact I just used mine to cut a 9 inch diameter watermelon in half today.

Mine is VG10 but my liners have never had rust. I have had the whole knife disassembled wiped down with clp gun oil though as my pockets can sometimes get pretty sweat soaked here in Arizona.

You're gonna dig it. A Police 4 K390 SE was my first serrated Spyderco. I like it so much that I bought a K390 SE Delica and Endura. My only recommendation is to get the standard SharpMaker.
Been using a Sharpmaker for years.
Ordered the Endura version for my wife. She will carry it in her purse along with the Delica G10 PE version I bought her years ago. Should make a good combo.

Got mine today.
Here’s my old Gen2 bought in 2000 for comparison.
Snapped the tip on the SS blade. Had it reprofiled. Measures just over 4” now.

I like everything about the Gen4 changes. Like the newer blade shape. FRN seems right for this application, although I understand if someone preferred G10. I like the grippy texture of the FRN and lighter weight.
The new one has lock rock like the old one, just not as pronounced yet. Not a big deal for me, but it should be noted for those who care about that.
Happy with the K390. I’m not a steel snob, but have been doing research on this steel and very much like what I read about it. Being non stainless doesn’t bother me.
It fits my hands well length wise. Hard for anything to fits my hands girth wise and still look reasonable.

The new sticker is cool too. Looks good on my drink cup.
All in all, a good day. I’m very pleased.

How do you like the redone handle on the version 4 vs 2? The finger choil that forces my fingers either too far forward or too far back is why I don't carry my PM2 much anymore. I prefer the endela where the handle gets my fingers pretty close to the cutting edge and there's no guesswork, just like the version 2 has. I'm thinking I may just pick up an endura since they didn't screw with that on the endura.

Do you have a preference between the 2?

I prefer the feel of the 4, but I have XXL hands and long thumbs. The spacing on the handle works well for me. Locks in my forefinger better than the 2. The rest of the fingers fit comfortably beside it. The finger choil past the grip doesn’t interest me at all. It’s too small for me to be confident anyway. Someone with smaller digits would be able to use the forward choil. With the size of my hands I don’t need a choil to do fine cutting, and that’s not what I bought it for. In the first set of pictures I was not holding the knife properly, just trying to take a picture. Not sure if this helps or not.

I tried moving the pocket clip to the tip down position, but when I tightened tha screws the blade would barely move. Moved the clip back and it worked fine. Not sure if the screws are too long or the pivot is being affected when tightening the screws. Anyone experience this? Odd because the screws don’t seem especially long.
I prefer tip down on a handle this long, like on my old POLICE.

I've heard of this happening, but I only run tip up. Do you see the screw ends protruding through? Not sure if you can see without taking off the handle/liner piece with clip still attached

Can’t see without taking the it apart. I found some extra screws, but only one that fit properly. It did not hamper the action. I’ll try to shorten the screws a bit I guess.
