Police and LEO what knife are you carrying

I would also echo the previous posts as to wait until after graduation and then follow department protocols. I carried a Leatherman Multitool on my belt and custom boot knife in my Rocky Boots.

I usually carry a Benchmade Infidel on my weak side and a more utilitarian type knife on my strong side.

I carry a microtech scarab weak side for weapon retention defense. Lately I carry a kershaw shuffle for cutting dope, prying stuff...its cheap and I have no problem ditching it if I beat the hell out of it. I used to carry a coldsteel push dagger weak side but like the guy from south africa said, people noticed it.

I just purchased one of these bad boys for my car. It's the one knife I hope to never use, but it'll be there if I need it. Good to see an endorcement by a professional first responder. Any tips for sharpening the belt cutter? Benchmade's website says they don't sharpen them.

8/19/2014: CORRECTION: BENCHMADE STATES THAT IT DOES NOT SHARPEN SERRATIONS. IT DOES NOT MENTION SAFETY HOOKS. My mistake,

When I was young and in patrol, jumping fences and running thru yards, it was a Spyderco Delica, regular then a waved model when that first came out. Now that I'm older, and me and my job are both slower, an Emerson CQC-10.

I've never tried to sharpen the belt cutter, but funny thing about Benchmade saying they won't sharpen it: I had the knife for a few months before I sent it off to BM to have my badge etched on the blade. While it was there, I requested that they sharpen the knife. When I got it back, I swear the belt cutter hook was sharper than when it left. I don't know if they sharpened it, or replaced it, but they definitely did something.

If he's not a knife guy, I'd recommend a good, cheap multitool like the LM Wingman. It has a decent blade and array of tools that would come in handy. Plus it won't break the bank when he loses it ( when, not if...). A good, solid, inexpensive folder would be on the list; I'd recommend either the Ontario Utilitac II (plain, non-tanto blade, round handle) or RAT 1. These are great knives that take and hold a good edge, are solid as heck on lockup and are light enough to carry all day, everyday. And you can afford to replace them.

One more thing that the years have taught me - folding knives are tools. They will see more duty digging, prying and cutting mundane things (in 30 years I've never cut a single seat belt or felon) than defensive use. Cops aren't knife fighters; if we need a knife to cut our way out of a situation, things have gone very bad. Get a good concealable fixed blade for that use, don't use it for anything else, don't tell anyone where you hide it, and practice deploying it with intensity.

A waved Delica or Endura as was mentioned above may be a near perfect compromise. It would give the fast draw ability of an Emerson, while remaining at a more replaceable price. The saber ground blade would also be able to take a good deal more abuse or non-conventional use.

Thanks for the reply, ljusmc. Based on your post I just checked the website and reread the 2014 Catalogue. I was mistaken. The do not sharpen serrations. I thought I had read that they don't sharpen serrations or safety cutters. I hate being wrong, but aside from the embarrasment of a stupid post, I'd rather be able to send the knife in than be right! I'll probably never need to use it, although it would've been handy the last time I had to perform redneck triage on my finger. Cutting duct tape with your weak hand can be difficult!

I carried a kershaw boa and then blur before I knew anything about knives. I was issued a leatherman crater c55bx and user it a lot.

once I started learning I got a spyderco military and zt 0560. now that I'm at where I'm at, I'm all about carrying a fixed blade custom. but all that is because I'm into knives. if I had to recommend a knife to someone who wants a tool and they're not into knives because of what goes into them, I'd suggest a kershaw select fire or leatherman crater. to be completely honest I needed a screwdriver and light prybar more than I really needed a blade. I still carry and use the leatherman even though I know it's junk steel because it's simply that. a light prybar and screwdriver with multiple bits. it helps tremendously when dismantling cars and other random things. I don't worry about breaking it like I would a higher end knife.

so to summarize, I carry two. one knife that is only for cutting and as a last ditch weapon and another that I use to tear things apart.

Hey guys my little brother and my best friend are in the process of joining your ranks and I want to get them a new folder for when they go to work. Which are you guys using or recommend for a freshy

I do not want to piss anyone off but. The op who started this thread said "in the process", so to me that don't even mean hired, or in academy.

So before you going buying anything find out what the department that will be sending them into harms will allows to be carried.

Because this is one way to get fired fast as a rookie. The doing of anything against department policy. Not that they are looking to fire you. It is about protecting themselves from liability law suits.
