Police: did build quality go down this year?

Hi, all.

I carried my Adventura all year, my little Cricket the year before that, etc. I pick out a new SS PE Spyderco every year for my birthday, and this year I got the police.

It's not that the build quality is poor. It just doesn't seem as good my older knives. I mean how are you even supposed to take it apart? Do the 3 phillips screws on the clip hold the whole thing together? This was a $94 knife--I expected it to be really something else. It isn't.

Not only that, I thought this was one of the ones that was made in Boulder? I'm wrong, I see now, but I could have sworn it was up on that stand they have in their factory store when I stopped by this summer.

Anyway, have Spyderco's become cheaper? I don't usually keep up on knives; I check in once a year.

TIA, all..... and

PS- taking advice on a different knife if I decide to return the police....

Quite a few Spyderco models have concealed pin construction.
Far as i can remember, the Police has always been made in Japan. Pinned construction isn't necessarily a sign of if being lacking.

As for your question about Spydercos becoming cheaper this year, i'll assume you mean more cheaply made.

I don't know what year your Police was made (usually indicated by the alphabetical tag on the box) but i have a Kris (also Japanese made) that was made this year, and one that was made last year, and there is no difference between the two.

I'm inclined to think the Police simply isn't for you.

Based on your preference for screwed construction and steel handles, current models other than the Advenutra and Cricket are the Volpe, the Poliwog and the Spin.

Not to turn this in to a "pinned vs screwed" debate, but pinned construction is in no way inferior to scewed construction.
In fact, I have had much more trouble from screw-construction knives than from pin-constructed ones....loose screws that needed Loc-Tite, stripped screws, lost screws, etc....

OK, I agree. It must just not be for me. I'm very glad to hear my favourite knife maker is still making good knives!

Thank you for the suggestions, swingshot. My Police is an '07, btw...

Thanks again, all.

I recommend that you carry and use the police for a week or so, and then decide wether you like it or not.

I recommend that you carry and use the Poice for about 5 years. I believe you won't have any more questions about the quality;)

The Police is a tank. I carry mine IWB, because it's so thin. The Police disappears IWB for concealed carry. It's a jack of all trades and a master of all as well. It is very correct to state the Police is not for everyone. If your goal is to be PC, the Police is not your knife. The Police is intimidating, a vault like lock, utility and SD ergonomics, excellent track record. I believe it is one of the most beloved models among LEOs. I wish I purchased the Police earlier in my law enforcement career. I have also been very impressed with my Kris.

Who is Barry the Blade?

I love my SS serrated Police. It is such a huge scary knife in such a concealable package.

If I wanted PE I would go for a Endura though. The Police and Civvie should be serrated.
I usually hate serrated knives but make exceptions for really good ones.

Sorry! But that's is really funny statement.
10 to 15 years ago. Nobody even thought of taking a perfectly good knife apart. That's because, most factory knives had hidden pivots. There were problems with overly tight openings or worst still, infernal blade play. Tightening the blade pivot with screw/torx-drivers or nut spanners these days are taken for granted, I see.
But coming back to the Police, I see no reason why it should even have construction problems after having been in production for more than a dog's life. It's pretty robust and as someone has written, "like a tank". If it's pinned right, its set for life. No need to mess around with torx-screws that rust and such.

Hi Data,

Thanx for the support.

Build quality on the Police model has not gone down, if anything it's been imrpoved over the years, minor refinements and upgrades in steel.

The "classic" SS Police has always been pinned. It's a tough knife that has certainly demonstrated it's longevity over the years.

Barry the Blade was a mob enforcer in the movie The Client; a very good movie, and only one of the many movies in which the Police model has been shown.

The Police is one of the very best models out there, and IMO has certainly achieved "classic" knife status.
