Police Model without the Stamp

I have a customer, who is interested to know
the value of such a knife. I have asked several people here at the web, with varied responses. I would like you all to ponder it and tell me what you think. I think he has a post down below here that is called "Police G-10 Scales" but no one has reponded....anyone? Or course any collectable item is only worth what a collector is willing to pay, but I would like you guys to banter this for a bit.

I'm sorry, I'm not really qualified to answer that question. As for my personal opinion though, I don't find it much more of a value. I think the Police stamp as a mark of authenticity, as much as the Spyderco at the bottom of the blade. But that's just me.

I also have a question for you (and anyone else). I just bought a stainless handle Police, and I am little concerned about something. The blade seems to swing very easily. I can open the knfie with a light flick of the wrist. Also, if I hold the knife parallel to the ground by the hole, the handle swings down perpendicular easily, and even swings back and forth a little. Is this normal? It locks up solid, but there is a little play when it's halfway open. There is enough force for the blade to close by itself at around 45 degrees though.

Other than that, I really like the knife, and I can't wait to get some use out of it.
Thanks,
pk

Danelle, I have two Police Models without the stamp. The reason they don't have them is because I took them off for reasons that I've mentioned elsewhere having to do with not wanting to explain to a cop what I as a civilian am doing with a "police" knife.
Anyway with 600 grit watersand paper, WD-40 and a lot of elbow grease I was able to remove the police stamp and make the blade look pristine. My point is unless the customer got the knife directly from the factory and can document it was made that way, there is no way to know if the stamp was there originally and later removed.

Then again... knowing Spyderco's reputation for quality control, this may be an exception!!!

The experts sitting behind me agree with me that this is not acceptable. Does the lock defeat? Snap its open spine on the table and check..even if it doesnt, you need to let us fix it. WYou can just hang on to it if you want, but we can get it to where it needs to be for you.

As for the Police my customer got, I truly believe it came like that. He told me when he bought it and from where, and I dont believe they messed with it. I've seen them at knife and gun shows for a pretty penny, but didn't really know what to tell him the value was.

djo62,
My G10 POLICE from Discount Knives came to me unetched and flat ground. Sal remarked that 200 such knives escaped his factory without his awareness. I personally feel that my knife with its "uniqueness" will not increase in value. Otherwise for collectors, that a different story and I do agree with you on that point. My POLICE so far has function excellent!

Gotta love Mom's kimchee!

Phantom4, question, are you a Phantom F4 pilot? Why, that was my favorite military aircraft when I was a kid, still my favorite.

I have an old Stainless Police that lacks the stamp on the side of the blade. I wouldn't want the POLICE mark on there anyway, for the same reason that Phantom4 stated. When I bought it years ago, it was my first Spidy knife and I didn't know that it was unusual.
I wouldn't part with mine at any rate.
However, the blade on mine is VERY loose and I've lost the pocket clip off of it. This is no complaint about the knife, it's been rode hard and put away wet MANY times. I would like to know what your service policy is though.
Should I ship it off to you and let you fix it up?

I cut it, and I cut it, and it's STILL too short!

Ken~

You would be surprised at the reconditioning and repair that goes on here! Keith and Eric get some knives in here that look like they've been to Kosovo and back..and I can't stress how good they look when they go back out. They can fix it right up for you, clean it, and sharpen it too. Send it in!!!

I have been collecting for approx 15 years and have won many awards for my collection at the Blade show. I have learned a lot about displaying over the years. I personally like to show off my collection and while I am doing that I also like to educate the people who come to view my display. I sort of have this thing for showing timelines where you can show someone the different stages of development in a particular knife. Take for instance the Spyderco Police model. The collection that I intend to display at the 2000 Blade show will have a Police model with every marking and variation that I can find and afford. So if there was a limited number that may have gotten out, that would indeed be one of the pieces that would make my collection interesting because that model has a story behind it. Now, How many die hard collectors are out there who are looking for such a piece. Probably not many that I know of. Then you have to look at the fact that model had a $199.00 retail price, and that Police model was probably purchased from a internet dealer for $120.00. Now lets say that I would like to own that Police model for my collection and would be willing to pay him
an extra $50.00 for it so that I can put it in my collection. He probably will not get much more than the Original MSRP if he is lucky and finds someone like me who is building a collection similar to mine. Other than that it is probably not worth much more than he paid for it.

I just bought an unstamped G-10 Police from MJ&S. Should I send it in to have it stamped?

Gee,after reading this thread,I'm starting to think that the stamped police models are the rare birds.
