Lieutenant, Deputy Sheriff, Jail Operations

Can't carry anything past the secure perimeter. Usually carry something from Chris Reeve off duty, but plenty of others get into the rotation from time to time.

Once working as a deputy in the jail I very heavy prisoner had braided a rope long enough to hang himself. I found him hanging from the rail of a top bunk, his weight had tightened the knots so tight I could not untie them. I cut the rope with my pocked knife and was able to revive him.
Survival or death was a matter of seconds, thankfully he lived.

He was in for a misdemeanor offense and latter found not guilty. Went on to become a pillar of the community.

Every time we conducted a search we found some home made knives in the jail. Taking the possession of reasonable knives away from jail personnel is a joke in my book and may endanger the lives of some of the wrong people.

Ed, we do have specialized cutters on hand for the sole purpose of cutting people down. Much like a seat belt cutter. Congratulations on the save.

PA State Constable - I serve warrants, transport prisoners, and keep the peace during civil issues and with Children, Youth, and Family Sevices.

I EDC a Spyderco Civilian, Cold Steel Safekeeper ll, and Kershaw Blur.

I am a municipal police patrol sergeant and I carry a Spyderco Police in my body armor, plate pouch and a GEC White Owl in my pocket. I have used the Spyderco once in fourteen years for something other than cutting crime scene tape. One New Year's Eve, a drunk cut an artery in his upper bicep and was bleeding everywhere. One of our officers had just returned from Iraq and she was going to place a tourniquet to try and slow the bleeding. I cut the sleeve off her thermal shirt and she made her tourniquet, drunk lived. The slipjoint, I use all the time to sharpen pencils, cut food and what have you.

Strider SNG in my back pocket.
Benchmade SOCP dagger in the plate pocket on my vest.
Of course a multi-tool (Gerber suspension) in my bag.

Another BM SOCP in the molle on my vest when I'm "doing that sort of thing".

Patrol duties 90% of the time.

ETA: while I prefer the SOCP. Lots of guys carry BM175's on the duty belt.

What I find interesting is that most of the police officers I know, and I know a ton, carry really crappy knives. Usually a Gerber or something Chinese. Once in a while ill see a spyderco or benchmade, but that's rare.

Colog, I've noticed that also. I carry a ZT 0350 when coming to work, same for me in Corrections I leave it in locker. Lucky you had that knife, my guy had braided shoe strings together. I picked him up yanked and broke the string then heard the pop in my back, lol. Herniated a disk and tore three ligaments, he was back from the hospital before me complaining he had to pay for the chopper ride, lol. I have a carry permit in home state.

I'm a jailer for a city PD, and we cannot carry anything in the jail area. I do have a CRKT Mini-Zilla Tool I keep in my bag in the kitchen. We also have the "box of crap knives" that are taken off of arestees and are never claimed.

My normal EDC is a BM 710 and the full size Zilla-Tool.

I am a detective for a municipal police department. It just depends on what I feel like for the day. Varies between one of my zero tolerance, spyderco or benchmades. It just depends on my mood. I always carry a bench made pus knife around my neck. I forgot the model of it. I am the only officer with the agency who carries a knife that cost more than $20.00.

Well i've carried lots of high end knives but for now its been a Spyderco Delica Wave. its hard to beat for patrol work. Truth is most cops carry crap knives from smoke shops and big box stores:(

Security Consultant here.

It really depends on my attire for the day.

But normally I carry whatever im in the mood for, I have a large EDC rotation.

The last month ive been carrying my Small Sebenza 21 alot and truly love it.

If I have to carry a blade that I dont want to clip to a pocket then Ill carry my Boker Tree Brand Dual Buck.

It fits perfectly in the bottom of my pocket just under my wallet.

Granted its not the quickest to deploy but I make do pretty well ;)

I carry a bk11 that i got weaved into my duty belt. And I rotate random spydies,sr1,kershaw,or zt in a pocket. And it is true most cops carry crappy knives. I try my best to push my ways on my buddies. Ive gotten a few of them to get at least a decent spydie.

I work as an armed guard for the DOD and I have a CRKT M16. But it has nothing to do with my job. It's a knife I like but it's older and beat up and I just leave it on my vest in my locker when I go home. My choice of knife and what I do for a living are unrelated.

I carry a Spyderco Military and a Buck Companion slip-joint off duty. On duty, I carry a Spyderco Harpy in my back right pocket (the serrated blade cuts flex cuffs very well), a Cold Steel X2 Voyager in my right sap pocket (the old model with the six inch blade), a Gerber multi tool on my duty belt, and a Leatherman Micra on my keychain. Oh yeah, my money clip is an old 70's era flat, wood-inlaid Gerber with a knife blade and nail file. I carry it on and off duty.

Sounds like the deputies I work with have a little better taste than the officers most of you guys are describing. I'm with a 2400+ sworn officer sheriff's department, and at my station alone, which has 200+ deputies assigned, I know numerous people who carry Benchmades, Spydercos, Cold Steels, Bucks, a couple who carry Emersons and Pro Techs, one who carries a Hinderer, and one who carries a Strider. I know of at least a dozen who carry those Kabar TDI, angle-handled fixed blade knives on their belts. About the cheapest I see are CRKTs, Smith and Wessons, and (newer) Gerbers. Our captain, who dresses in a suit while at work, carries a six-inch bladed Cold Steel Ti-Lite dirk.
