Well after seeing some pictures of the job svrider3 did on his, I couldn't resist and had to try polishing the G10 on my RAM.

svrider3's much better pictures:

As he said when he posted his, it looks WAY better in person than it does in the photos. I'm REALLY happy with how it turned out.

Now I'm tempted to go on a rampage and become the Charlie Mike of polished G10. I really want to try this on my Damascus Skyline, and my Groove too. I've even been eyeing my beloved JYDIICB but that's supposed to be my heavy duty knife, so I think I'll leave it alone and choose function over form.

With the RAM, it was a no-risk experiment. I have 2 sets of wood scales and 2 sets of G10 scales, so if I screwed up, it really didn't matter. If I screw up on my Skyline, I have to buy a new knife.

Anybody else tried polishing the G10 on a production folder? I'm even tempted to pick up a Spyderco Persistence and give it the same treatment.

My DAM Skyline as just been waiting for me to get a wild hair and go to work on it.

Ya that's the one that is REALLY tempting me. Because I've always thought that the Damascus and G10 was a bit of a weird combination. The Damascus says gentleman's knife, the G10 says tactical/user. I think if it was polished it would look awesome.

You guys have 15 minutes to convince me that polishing my Skyline is a bad idea, after that, I cannot be held responsible for what happens.

The only downside I can think of is that it'll make the scale pretty thin.

Houtex polished the scales on his 0350, but didn't like the feel. They were too thin. The other downside was that they were slick with not enough contouring to keep it from sliding in hand. That's why it was sent to me.

That said, it shouldn't be much of a problem on a light user like the skyline. That knife would be awesome with carbon fiber handles.

Looks pretty nice !

I took a 2000 grit to my RAM scales just to knock down the abrasiveness.. I need to post pics of mine after the polish job I did on it.

The RAM is such a great knife ! :)

Ya it's such a light user, I'm not really worried about losing any traction, plus the finger choil is pretty ridiculous, I don't think it's gonna go anywhere.

Nope, not talking you outta that:D I wanna see it:thumbup::D

Alright, off to the sink I go, expect an update in ~30 minutes.

I finished my first CF handles today. I'm pretty excited about the stuff right now. It's expensive and messy, but it looks so cool. :D

Ya basically my motivation for this is that I can make cheap knives that come with G10, look and feel quite similar to CF.

I know it's not QUITE as nice, but it's a hell of a lot cheaper.

GREAT SUCCESS!! (imho)

Just tweaking/resizing/uploading pics, update inc...

Wow, I can't believe that actually took 90 minutes, it flew by while I was doing it.

I decided to take a whole bunch of pics and almost make this a bit of a how-to.

Got the tools ready for dissasembly. Damn Kershaws have worn the writing off of my T6 :D

Here it is all taken apart. I forgot to remove the 2 "nuts" in the back scale before I took this picture, but I did remove them before polishing the scales.

Scales and 400, 600, 1000, 2000 grit sandpaper.

Doesn't show up to well in pictures but, difference between stock and after 400 grit:

Then 600:

Then 1000:

And after 2000:

When all else fails, IMPROVISE!

In this pic you can see the white polish stick in the pores near the ends. This tells me that I need to sand those areas down more.
Polished-Skyline-014.jpg

So I went back over the ends with 600, 1000, 2000, and then polished again. That looks better :
Polished-Skyline-016.jpg

Then I cleaned out all the gunk from the holes and repeated everything on the other side. I was doing the final polish on the 2nd scale when I nicked the scale with the base of the dremel :( So I had to get the scratch out with 600, then 1000, 2000, polish again.

Done deal:

Thats beautiful! I gotta see this on an 0300 or 0301!

You'd lose a lot of material if you sanded off the texturing on the 0300. You'd be better off replacing the scale. That way you could get exactly the contouring you want. It wouldn't match the Ti scale, though. (I'm not sure that smoothing the Ti scale would be a good idea.)

Thanks. Again I have to say it looks way better than the pictures show.

I just ordered a Spyderco Persistence that I will probably be doing this to. I'm hoping I can turn it into a budget Sage
