I used to be the same way, but I learned to love the steel. So I tolerated the patina that came with it. Over time I learned to love the patina too. Coincidentally, when my grandfather passed away, I was given his pocket knife: a yellow case trapper with deep gray blades just like mine. Made me appreciate mine even more.

That's kind of a self fulfilling prophecy there isn't it? You keep the carbon steel from forming the protective layer of patina that it needs to work well with very little maintenance -- then you decide you don't like it for working knives? Hmmmm....

If it were a vintage knife, i'd say STOP, but it ain't so Flitz away if that's how you roll:D

had friend who asked me how to get more chicks I told him...Get rid of that......... Funky Old Patina :D:D:D

Patina isn't THAT protective, it is like saying salt bluing protects from rust...which it does...poorly....I simply find stainless steel(or D2 for that matter) superior for smaller knife blades. Damascus has a "forced"(etched) patina, and although I love the material, I don't care for that in using knives either.

I have 30+ years of edc knife carry under my belt fwiw.

Your opinion is based on the fact you have carried and used carbon steel and made up your mind that you don't like it. We all have our preferences, and I respect you opinion as you came to it through experience. I think the OP should resist his urge to polish the blades then make up his mind if he likes patina/ carbon steel blades.

i dont know. i have been more of a tactical knife guy. but after seeing that swayback jack. i am gonna have to get me one of those. :D

I am there now. That was the reason for the post. I really did not curl up in a fetal position. Well, not today anyways, that was last week.;)

Cj I am glad you were talked out of it before going over the edge and doing something you would regret the rest of your life.;) You are a very sick man my friend.:D:D Send me all youe knives before someone really gets hurt.:p

You know, although patina is great and has its advantages, if you like a shiny knife, then by all means polish it. That's one of the cool things about owning knives....they are yours, so do what you want with them. Other than looks, it kinda helps with steel preservation....but if you are going to be keeping your knives oiled, clean and shiny, then you are taking care of the knife so polish away if that's what you like

That's some very, VERY cool knife. I'm totally crazy about mine. Leave the Flitz be, just wipe the blade with some good gun oil. The dark blades will make it even cooler. You're one lucky dude.

I would personally be careful about what kind of oil you use to wipe down the blades, if you use it for food. YMMV

Seems like the traditional slipjoint swine flu has hit ya there gundude!
It really has a great fit and finish for the price. Chestnut bone cv, the brownish red color is awesome. The design just continues to grow on you. Someone needs to do a thread, "If you were stranded on a desert island and could only have one traditional slipjoint til you were rescued what would it be?" Everyone would have to say Swayback jack! Just kidding, I hope no one starts that thread.

I am a Kentucky boy and I like my knives shiny.;) But my favorites right now are Carbon Old Timers and Carbon Boker USA's. I use Metal Glo on mine, it cleans them but leaves a nice patina also. If you like shiny go for it.
