Polishing out scratches and sharpening a Kris...

I have this 11'' Italian Stiletto with a Kris blade that is about 15 years old. There are lots of scratches on the blade... some are fairly deep. What would be the best method for "restoring" and/or removing the scratches? I've never tried to polish stainless steel before and I don't want to mess up the geo of the blade. Also the knife is very dull and needs the edge put back on. (I'd rather send it in somewhere if the costs are reasonable) Thanks in advance.

Honestly, I'd keep it the way it is and not accidentally mess it up. I'd just keep it on my knife shelf.

That's why I'm thinking about sending the knife in to a Smith or whatever... kinda nervous about sending a "switchblade" in the mail though...

It'd be a shame to have it stolen by the customs pirates. Do you know of anyone locally who can do anything?

Those knives were never meant to be sharpened.
You can sand it lengthwise with wet/dry paper wrapped around a broomstick or similar round object. Start with 600 grit, and see if it removes the scratches. If not go to 400, then 600, then 1000, then 1500, then 2000 grit. You can then wrap a heavy cloth around the stick, and polish with Simichrome.

There is a cutlery service near me... don't know if they do any restoration work. Guess I'll call them on Tuesday. This knife has alot of sentimental value...

Judging from the pictures it looks like it's in good condition. I wouldn't even worry about trying to fix it up, especially if it's sentimental. May I ask how you got it?

A friend of mine that passed away a few years back got for me from Italy... might be a Frank Beltrame. The scratches are alot worse than the photos show, you can feel them.
@Bill, why is the knife not meant to be sharpened if I may ask? It was fairly sharp as I recall a long time ago, not shave sharp but had a decent edge...

I don't know about the Spyderco.
I do know about the Italian knife.

not sure about eurorpean-type wavy blades. philippine muslim krises are a bit like stippled edges: blunt and tough on the convexes, razor-sharp on the concaves.

The Spyderco Kris was/is a totally different design and steel. That said, I found them to be more of a collector piece than a highly functional EDC blade.

The knife you have pictured there is also never going to be a particularly functional knife for what I would want to do in my EDC tasks. I would suggest you leave it as is and preserve it as you received it, or have a pro polish it up, but not waste effort on putting a super sharp edge on it. What do you plan on doing with it that requires a sharp edge?
