Well this is odd... I was going to order some more of the polishing powders I have in the shop and the supplier (Mager Scientific) quit carrying them.

My google-fu is weak, as I keep getting crappy results. I've looked under many searches, such as "optical polishing powder" "optical abrasives" "rock polishing abrasives" etc.... And nothing is coming up.

I'd like to get something in the 1200X range... maybe AO instead of the Silicon Carbide I have.

I found some 1500 on ebay which is cheap enough I'd be willing to try it. The hang-up on "just trying" things like this though, is that by the time you're going to use something like this.... you've got way too much time invested in the blade to feel like experimenting is a good idea!

Any leads on quality, powdered abrasives would be appreciated. :)

Hey Nick, try McMaster-Carr

Pg. 2508 of their big catalog # 110 shows every grit from 90 - 8000, along with every compound...AO, SC, CAO, COA, A, & LA

Why do I get the feeling somebody over at the Wheeler Forge is finishing some wicked Hamon :) ;)

edited to add : the above are compounds, not powders.

They also show white AO powder up to 1200X (in 5 lb. cans @ $105) :foot:

Nick, I just tried a Google search for "lapidary tumbling charges" and found some 1000 grit aluminum oxide, $4.75 a pound. They also have some AO "polish powder", which I assume is even finer. They also have tin oxide, cerium oxide, rouge, and tripoli.

You might also try searching "tumbling grits", or "tumbling supplies".
