Can someone please tell me the best way to polish your wooden handles. At the moment the handles have been sanded down to 600 grit, then oiled with linseed oil and rubbed back with fine steel wool. What is the next step?

Thanks

oil with linseed oil again

wait...

linseed...etc.

If for kitchen knives and you want them to be food safe, use food-grade mineral oil.

will using a oil finish like linseed oil darken with use. and can I put a wax on oil?

My experience says you can't put wax over the oil, I could and am probably wrong. I think linseed oil darkens with age once again I'm probably wrong.

Reddwarf, You could try one that I use if you are using hard woods like iron wood, osage or epee (not sure of the spelling). I use white rouge and a buffing wheel then follow up with carnuba wax. Looks like marble. Personal preference if your into that sort of thing. Good luck.

kvolle, I believe he's already started with a coat or two of linseed..... I finish oily woods in the same manner you mentioned. Is the wood "ipe"? That's some tough stuff.

Will Leavitt, yes sir that's it. Forgive me for my spelling. A wood crafter I know used some for a deck at a museum and had a lot of scraps left over which he gave to me. Yes it is hard stuff but besides maybe putting on a UV protectant it's ready for use. I love it. I wish I knew where to get more. I have enough left for mabye six more knives but then I'm back to osage or iron wood.
I ruined a blade cutting scales the first time I used it. I now cut very slowly. LOL

I've used Ren Wax, with excellent results, on wood that I'd treated with pure tung oil.

(Of course I waited for the oil to dry fully before applying the wax.)
