William Henry, Case, Schrade, Barlowe. All names we know, all makers of knives that are less likely to scare the Sheeple.

But there are alternatives: cutting tools that don't fit the common image of a knife. An easy example is the SAK, but the kiridashi is, also.

I was wondering if anybody out there can think of others.

Thanks, in advance.

A pair of good quality scissors. With at least one edge significantly thinned.

Yeah, I remember now, CRKT had a thing that looked like an electrician's scissors when it was sheathed, and had a knife blade on the other end, instead.

I'm not entirely sure how a SAK doesn't fit the "...common image of a knife..." or how a person fundamentally, irrationally afraid of knives isn't going to be afraid of a kiridashi (and what about the CS Tac Kiridashi?)....or any knife for that matter.

But certainly some knives, like slippies, appear less threatening to more-open-minded non-knife people.

You can put a decent edge on the claw of one of those "widgy" pry bars. I was let on a flight with one and I used it to open my airline peanuts. :p

People always give me "what the hell is going on" looks when I pull out a small fixed blade. Not sure if it's the best option; but to most people it's unusual to EDC a fixed blade.

Anything covered with Sponge Bob stickers will work. Seriously - appearance is everything. That was the whole basis for the former ban on so-called assault weapons. The "assault weapons" were not more lethal - they were just more scary looking.

So carry whatever you want - just Duracoat it pink and cover it with stickers. And tell the Sheeple that you use it at the Children's Hospital in your capacity as volunteer coordinator.

LMAO :thumbup::thumbup:

Were you the one with the Cold Steel Espada with Spongebob sticker idea?

Any association I make between Spongebob and a knife is likely to make a lot of children cry....

But the idea of color influencing the perception of a knife has some merit.

Pretty true, too! Just another reason why I like it when knives come in any color other than black.

Why it's always neccesary to conform to the wishes, perceptions or phobias of others? If what you are doing is within the law I don't think I need to worry about what others think. If you conduct yourself as a sane, responsible, law-abiding person, most people won't care if you carry a knife, no matter what kind, provided you carry it discreetly, and it's not something really unusual (say, a great sword or a humoungous knife, to church). The hoplophobic persons, are not going to change their mind, no matter what arguments you use, so why waste you time?

I've found an answer to the whole "polite looking knife thing"

When the time comes to cut something, I usually announce it. Per example~

Thing needs cut at some place by some person/me.

I say "Hmmm, Oh you know what I'll cut it with my knife I have here."

All the sheeple are now ready.

Works a lot better than whipping out a knife at light-speed unannounced. Also enables me to carry whatever I want.

Hahaha! All the sheeple are now ready.

I also find this technique works well.

Seeing a knife is a very traumatic event for a sheeple. If they are given warning, it allows them to prepare themselves to properly handle the fear they experience as soon as they see me take my leatherman micra out of my pocket and flick open its massive 1" blade.

If they ask any questions, I politely let them know that I've been officially certified to use up to 1.5", so they need not worry about their safety.
