Political Symbolism of wearing a Keffiyah / Shemagh

Frankly they look kind of cool but I don't own one because I don't really have a practical need for it, and because of the political connections.

I might pick one up in OD green or Khaki, or one in a normal bandanna pattern, if I saw it, but I'm not going out of my way to get one as a fashion statement.

while we are on the subject of scarves/scarf like things. Does anyone have any resources for scarves and scarf tying. Whenever I try to get my scarf to cover my face decently it always falls down or it doesnt cover the best.

Anyone have anything?

It does a good job in moderate cold. I'm not talking about Arctic cold, though. In the winter, I pull one around my neck routinely and if the wind picks up, draw it up over my mouth and nose.

I grew up in Saudi Arabia back in the 70s. Westerners sometimes took the red and white ones and modified them for their own use. (Skirts, ponchos, scarves, etc.) This was considered offensive by the local population.

It is my understanding that the black & white pattern, when adopted by westerners, is generally considered a hat tip to the Palestinian cause, or at least a show of solidarity against Israel.
