You ever see a knife, love the look of it, plan on getting it, but never really read that stats on it (in this case: size) - such is the case with the Spyderco Poliwog G10. I have been wanting the original since I can remember...never bought it, had many a trade deal brewing for one, but nothing ever materialized, so I never wound up getting one. Then the G10 one comes out...and this time I am determined to get one. Finally picked one up, and to my surprise (slightly disappointed) it is VERY small:

Here it is pictured with the Spyderco Salsa:

Don't ask me why - but in my head, I thought it was going to be bigger, much bigger...at least 50% or more bigger then it actually is.

For an MSRP of $184.95..I was thinking there would be much more knife. Now, this is not to say I don't like it...I do, but not for $118.95 (actual price) plus shipping. This should have been a $50 knife to me at most.

Curious what others think of my assessment - to see if you agree or disagree. Yeah, I know, I should have read the stats on the size, then I wouldn't have been so suprised.

It is a ball-lock so that probably accounts for the price. The Dodo wasn't much cheaper was it? Factor in inflation since the Dodo was produced and it's priced about the same I'd say.

What you can do when thinking about a new Spyderco, is go to Spyderco's site and click enlarge on the knife's picture. Then use your % adjuster on your screen to get the size as close as you can. I do this a lot and all you need is a ruler to check the size against specs.

Yes, the Poliwog is a relatively small knife. Shame you never thought to read the specs in the catalog, they all seem to be correct Or took a look at any of the threads here or on the Spyderco factory forum which had photos showing the Poliwog with other knives. Heck, you could have even asked for comparison shots. Am sure I've posted this one at least once in response to that type request...

And its funny...I am *always* and I mean always asking for comparison shots with other knives, as my posts will attest... But silly me this time I didnt (smacking self in the head) I don't know what came over me. Oh well, you live and learn.

A G10 Poliwog is a $50 knife? I know you speak of size in relation to price, but $50? You know better than that. Don't you?
The only Spydercos you can pickup for $50 are FRN models, or byrds.

True - I might have slightly exaggerated - but no way it should be a knife that claims over $100....you have to agree with me there, no? :)

$100 street price sounds great. $90-$95 even better if you catch a deal.

Compared to the P'Kal's street price, the Poliwog's price tag seems about right. Compared to the D'Allaras, it seems just a little high. I hope my scheme of saving up allows me to afford one by year's end.

With all the lamenting over the Dodo, I was sure to buy two of the newer Poliwogs; the first as a birthday gift to my son (to supplement his original), the second for me, being used as a money clip. Noticeably lighter/better grip than the original, an incredible knife.

I would definitely pick one up in the $80-85 range. That's a good price.

I feel your pain bro.....that happened to me when I got my BM "mini" Reflex auto. It's a really nice knife, but sooooo small. Oh, and the spring broke after about a month of owning it!! That was really disappointing.

The G10 Poliwog makes me desperately want a G10 or FRN version of the Lava. :(

I kinda thought the same thing about the size but if you use the thing, you really start to appreciate Eric's design and ergos! Fit and finish equal $ IMO. If you really want one, check out sierratradingpost.com. They have stainless for 79.95!

Knives are often seeming a bit small or a bit larger than expected, even when I occasionally bother to look at the specks. :o

The Dodo's are definitely a lot smaller than I always thought too, those comparison pics really are very useful.

For some reason, even knowing how small it is, the Poliwog has been on my radar. Probably my huge preference for Eric's unreal ability to make great ergos, locks, and big time cutting all come together in a unique package. I bet before the year is up I'll find some reason to buy one. It just looks like it fits like a glove giving you complete control over the cutting chore at hand.
