I do NOT. If I wanted a bent knife I'd buy a Kukri. Sales however will be the determining factor as to whether this was a good move. Leather sheaths are also lame.

Sure hope the Busse Basics line doesn't get bent!

The Basic line already have dropped handles which are of similar shape to the new ones on the INFI models.

Bases strictly on the pics, I don't like the look of them. But I fear change, so that could be the reason! I would like to handle one though. They probably feel better than they look.

I like the looks of the straight Battle Mistress better than the "bent". But, I'd be willing to bet the farm that the bent version is superior in utility. I've found that with shorter blade choppers the curvature allows for a much smoother chop and less wrist stress. Besides, it would still look good even if it came with pink handle scales and a purple-yellow-orange tie-dyed blade coating. Hey, that's an idea. Call it the:

Draft Dodger
Slick Willie
Far Out
Purple Haze

So, Get Bent!!

Up until recently, Busse knives have ALWAYS had a unique look...now, some look-alikes have emerged, but even so, there remains a great and unusual personality to a Busse Knife...largely due to the function over the asthetics.

Believe me, Jerry did not undertake the changing process lightly...remember, this new handle is something that he did as a DIRECT result of his personal pain and suffering as a maker and designer of knives.

Nobody will dispute the performance gains of this new design...I can say that whole heartedly.

It would be best for all to temper their opinions, "based on looks alone", with the reports which will start coming in from the customers when the knives start shipping...which will be SOON!!!

Andy, you're right. Looks of a knife matter minimaly, but the overall function and usefullness is the most important thing. Have you chopped with one yet?

Personally I like the new look. I think the original design was actually prettier in the traditional way, but that's because of the way I view knives.
Just think of the new BM and SH sorta like a killer knife with a bent stag handle.

I ordered one of the new ones yesterday just because of the change. I kept saying,
"someday" and when I saw the new one in the new ad in Blade
It looked so comfortable that I was swayed into a decision.
I am really glad I waited!!

Of course I am one of the khukuri guys so I sorta like that style handle anyway.

I had the same reaction Volvi and was going to post this topic myself. But.....The proof will be in the using. Many people have contributed to the design change I'm sure and I'm also sure Jerry did his very best to come up with the best functioning knife he could. So lets wait and see. Mine should arrive sometime in June if the Gods are smiling on me. I should have a "new design" Badger Attack" in the next week or two (ANDY, I can't stand the wait!!!!!). We'll see how that knife improved as well.

Personally I hope everyone hates the new handles 'cause less people will buy them (sorry Jerry) and the prices will drop and then maybe I can afford one 'cause I really, really, dig 'em.

I got a feeling there's not much chance of this happening so...I will start saving my pennies. I just sent a check out for a new small Sebenza today so my knife budget is seriously depleted. But that Steel Heart II in Desert Tan Canvas Micarta with the diamond quilted thingies just looks awesome. Nice ad in Blade.

Maybe I'm just a traditionalist, but my mental jury is still out. They look cool, but also (in my best "Fargo" voice) "funny lookin' in a general sort of way..." Then again, every new car looks weird to me until I see a few of them on the road and grow accustomed to them.

I would like to see, and would probably strongly recommend, a "generational" designation, such as calling them the Steel Heart III to avoid confusion and give them a new sense of identity, and also to recognize the vintage of the current SHII's.

Any thoughts, Jerry?

I don't know how much better the new design will perform, but as far as aesthetics go, I like the old design better. To me, the old design is classic Busse. Of course, I also recognize that aesthetics don't matter much when you're out in the field in an emergency situation--all you care about then is performance.

My initial reaction to the look was negative. But, you know, it's growing on me. In fact, I'm not very happy about it. Now I'll have to go through that lusting and waiting process all over again.
I think that form follows function. If the new design works better, it will become cool and attractive to those who respect superior performance. For me, the jury's out until I get a chance to use one for a while.

Not my preference BUT I can understand why it came out how it did. Max comfort for a direct chop and maybe satisfy the INFI Kukri need. I personally like the standard handle but I use knives in a utility/fighter role.

Interestingly perhaps unfortunately as well, Kelly Worden, designer of the Wortac folder injured his hand via car accident. The Wortac handle design was influenced by his hand injury I believe and is also forward canted.

Hey Jerry,

Why don't you make the SH and BM in both straight and bent handle versions?

I HATE 'em...

because now I have to figure out how to save up enough money for one...or two...or

.

I wish he'd used pink and purple handles with baby blue blade coating...

Maybe the next series of tests can include how fast a Busse can cut through my EMPTY WALLET!!!

I can understand the appeal of the new handle, but if i wanted to chop, i'd use my sword (made by yours truly, have't broken it yet) I prefer the old handle. I agree with volvi, i desperately hope they continue making the old style, because no way i can afford one if they attain collector status. or even slightly rare status.

Andy and Jerry,
I for one, dispute the performance gains of the bent handles over the straight handles. The only performance gains I can think of are the fact that they will out chop a straight handled knife, be more comfortable to hold when stabbing straight forward, and it seems that they would be more comfortable to draw out of a sheath. However, please enlighten me as to any other performance gains, because at the moment I can't think of any.
There are however several things that I can think of that would be more difficult to do with bent handles. For example, prying would be more difficult, since a straight blade would be easier to pry with than a bent handled blade. I also believe that upward stabs (when holding the knife in the usual method), would be more difficult and less powerful. I also believe that downward stabs (holding the knife w/ the blade pointing down, and edge away from your forearm), in the classic stab, would also be more difficult and less powerful. If one was to cut anything on a table (such as food), the bent handle would also make that task more difficult. Lashing a bent handled knife on a pole to use it as a spear (although usually not a good idea), would not make a better spear, either. If I had to hit the butt of the knife with my palm to stab through a tough hide, a bent handle would also be more difficult to use.
As far as I see it, there are more advantages to having a straight handled knife versus having a bent handled knife. However I'll concede that I may be wrong, so if I am, please share with me all the advantages of the bent handles.

You know, we all need to give the knives a chance. After all, they are INFI Busse knives. Lets wait for the knives to come out, maybe get some reviews and actual field tests. Then, depending on the results, we all voice our opinion.
