Lethe aside, I think Charon is originally sailing the river Acheron (rive of sorrow, in Homeric hymes it's the river of hades) and Dante follows that and names Phlegyas, (guy who burned down one of Apollos temples), as the ferryman over the Styx.
Never heard it described by name only that it was a skiff or a boat - some write "roomy" others write that it was so small that the fees was only one coin.
