my vote is always for metal, itll make the knife practically indestructible, heavier tho. Precious metals if you can ;)

Find somebody- it will be difficult- to make you chequered Ebony or Horn. Otherwise, leave well alone, the texture of the bone is remarkable.

Those caramel jigged bone covers are so nice but if you happened to get one without good dye penetration I could see having it recovered.

I voted smooth stag. Why not make your current jigged bone your backup, and make you newly recovered knife the one-of-a kind that your are dreaming of?
Mammoth would be nicer than stag... ;)

I'd love to see a nice Stag; if you MUST change them!!
😁 Having a duplicate (both users!) makes me spoiled for choice and allows me to entertain silly fantasies such as this. Stag seems to be the consensus, and coming from the man himself, well it almost, almost, feels like getting the blessing to go forth on such a mad endeavor. But, it's as you say, nice stag is the key, and the weight of making sure I find something worthy alone makes me scared to chance it. 😬

Only way I’d change the covers
would be
If I it was
gonna be ivory,
But that
Is just me.

And it would have to be a darn special piece of mammoth to boot. But stag is the lesser of two evils there for a user. But I like deer more than camels so maybe I’m biased 😂 your knife your call. Post a pic if you do change it up…

edit add:

why not just sell it and order a custom? That knife would fetch a small fortune on the way to a custom…

I could help you fund a custom! (You miss 100% of the shots you don't take, right? 😏)

I personally think the jigging on the Lambsfoot knives is some of the best ever done by GEC (along with their peach seed used on the 48 diamond jacks). With that being said, the crown jewel of that run was the small batch smooth ivory bone knives.

As far as stag goes, work with any reputable knife tinkerer (if you can get on Glenn’s books he is worth the wait) and you’ll get some Grade A stag. I’ve had many knives rehandled in stag and have yet to be disappointed.

I'd agree with you on that jigging my friend, and I'd add Charlie's Navy Knife too :)

I love the look of the smooth ivory bone models, but I prefer the jigged bone

1. Don't do it, those covers are great as is!
2. But if you must, what about musk ox horn?

I'd leave it as is, but if you could get someone to do a good recreation of what me and Charlie call traditional Sheffield 'Flat Cap' jigging, it'd be a special knife
